The local SuperValu always had dud pricing as well. Don't go there any more,but always assumed it was just somebody too lazy to do their job.

Yes but M+S offers a whole other level of experience ( getting ripped off with class is nice ) ,Super Valu is no posher than the others yet is closer to M+S in prices than it is to Aldi

They can all be cheaper or more expensive depending on the ranges you pick from.

Supervalu and dunnes can seem expensive, but a lot of people getting almost 20% off in them with vouchers.

Nolan’s in Clontarf in Dublin is expensive but a nice experience. And they have real quality everything… a nice place to shop. Tend to go for goodies…and their butcher / deli counter. They do great freshly baked breads too.

I think Dunnes are the better overall with their e 10 off 50and e5 off 25 and other specials .No downloading from apps or any of that extra complications just a voucher at the till which you use the next time you shop.

It depends on what you buy and which brands. We find Dunnes cheaper for what we want but I know others prefer Aldi.

Two other high end expensive supermarkets would include Fallon & Byrne in Dublin 2 and Donnybrook Fair in Malahide.

The big trick is that "convenience" stores only offer the expensive brands so it won't make much difference where you shop it you insist on subsidising excessive marketing.

For value you have to go own brands and for me for most things it would be

Adi (main shop) - Lidl (some products) - - - - - Dunnes (some products) - Tesco - - SuperValu ( it's not SuperQuinn, it's not even yellow pack ) - - Tesco Extra Value ( peanuts are not awful )

Spar and EuroSpar rarely visit and not tempted.

Lidaldi : I would generally buy in Aldi and then top up in Lidl because they are often very close to each other. Tesco and Dunnes for brands the German discounters don't have.

Tesco import most stuff even when there is a local supplier. Fanta 6 cans , Normal price €4.75 , price with card €3.75. Lidl had them for €3.49

I go to Dunnes all the time now as it's only 2 minutes from where I live, and the €10 off €50 and €5 off of €25 vouchers definitely make it worthwhile. The meat quality in Dunnes is quite decent also. There's a Lidl also but it's at the other end of the town, making it more awkward to get to.

Seriously, if you shop around you can get value anywhere, even Donnybrook Fair.

Dunnes is actually cheaper than anywhere currently for those 2l bottles of sparkling water.

M&S is the one that is consistently expensive, for basically everything. Some of their food is nice though.

For me Supervalu is the most expensive.

I go to Waitrose when I want to treat myself and use as much plastic packaging as possible. It's like M and S on steroids for packaging.

I haven't been in M&S for years, can't afford them any more (except for clothes, where they position themselves at the bargain end of the market if anything). Do they still do that thing where the packers insist on putting bottles of bleach or similar items that if leaked might contaminate food into little cellophone wrappers? That used to amuse me.

I alternate on rotation between SV and Tesco. I get the same core list of food items each time. I see no difference in price at all overall. In addition I get certain items from Tesco on a fortnightly basis that are cheaper there - water, coke, cat food. But I find Tesco has shocking stock shortages so I could not rely on them every week for groceries.

I haven't tried Dunnes yet since they only started delivering recently. Must give them a try.

I know that. That's why I look out for deals in there like bread reduced because its on its last day or there yummy gf free hot Cross buns because I am a coeliac and it's expensive enough as it is. Off course the government done nothing for us in the budget and neither did the Coeliac society of Ireland even do they said they were talking to the government. There should be no taxs on any gf food.

This was at least ten years ago. Incredible it's still going on.

Amazing how Lidl and Aldi staff are paid more than their Tesco and Dunnes counterparts, but are the most grumpiest!

General range and selection in Tesco has been cat since Brexit, but they have the self-scan option, so it's a must for me.

M&S are expensive of course, but their €12 dine-for-two deals used to be really good.

I shopped almost exclusively in SV (formerly a Superquinn) for 20 years as it's the only walking distance supermarket, and I never once remember any issues with incorrect pricing.

I used to buy a few ready meals from M&S every couple of weeks because cooking for one it can sometimes be as cheap to avoid wasting extra ingredients. But recently I feel they have absolutely lost the plot with prices. I have walked out without anything the last two times I had a look as I just couldn't bring myself to pay those prices, so have stopped looking. I think there's still OK value on their treats and cakes though.

I know a girl who's not even coeliac and she insists that there are gluten free options for her wherever the group go to eat because she is one of those people.

This leads me to believe there should be a 1000% tax on gluten fee products.

It would soon sort out the wheat from the chaff.

M&S food range has been absolutely dire since Brexit kicked in properly. Especially the Chinese and Thai meals. Almost impossible to get a main course AND a rice. Usually one of them is missing. Tesco was bad but seems to have recovered a bit.

Yes definitely yes. It has come to the point now that when I pay and pack my shopping I take 2 mins aside and go through my receipt before I leave the shop. I don't know how many times I've come home from Super Valu only to find products displayed at half price etc; have been charged at full price. Head wrecking. Or another one they do is advertise a certain product with a discount (But only certain flavours) for example; pasta sauce was €2.99 now €2.00 but when you pay you realise it's only the tomato and basil flavour or the smoked bacon flavour But not the one you chose like the garlic and tomato one. Again Head Wrecking. Caught out so many times with this and Super Valu are desperate for it. Always check receipts.

If you look at the meals they sell, ,most very unhealthy and heavily salted.

Also, their lack of Irish produce just turns me off.

Aldi and Lidl work their staff extremely hard but pay them well , Dunne’s are awful to work for, Tesco probably the best , my sister is an employment law solicitor

A neighbour of mine when I was growing up (in Dublin) used to spend about 80% of her time shopping to completely maximise her savings. She didn't drive, so she'd be on her bike down to H Williams in the morning to pick up the things they did cheapest. Drop them home, then straight up to Quinnsworth for other bargains they were doing. Back home then straight back out to Superquinn for some special up there. Then off to this shop or that shop for other stuff to save a few pence. Just constantly on the go.

Personally, I shop based on experience, not price.

My local Tesco is a grim warehouse staffed by fairly dour weirdos. One guy on the tills, who would never, ever speak, used to take as long as possible to scan each item - sometimes he'd pick it up and read the instructions or ingredients in front of you. Then, as soon as he scanned it, he'd pause then fire it as hard as possible down to the bagging area. Didn't matter if it was eggs or a glass jar, to him it was a bowling ball, and the rest of your shopping were the pins. Then he's casually pick up your next item, and in his own good time have a good auld léamh while you tried to predict when he'd launch it so you could catch it. Then when he was done, he'd just sit back and say nothing at all. No telling you the total, no asking if you had a club card or how you were going to pay. There was another woman who used to rate and review everything I bought. If anything cost more than a few Euro, she'd be giving out to me for spending so much. If she like the look of something she hadn't tried before, she's be inspecting the packet. So needless to say, I avoid that place as much as I can. The only thing it has going for it is that it opens late, so I do end up in there some nights if I'm stuck.

The local Aldi is a nightmare for parking. It just seems to attract all the people who have no idea what a painted line on the ground is for. Their control of trolleys isn't any better. It never really enters my head to go there, to be honest.

The local Lidl is a bit better. At least it has the smell of bread from the bakery. Unfortunately, the lights have this really annoying buzzing sound that is pretty much unbearable. If I have my earphones with me it's ok, but without them I give it a miss. I do make sure go there to stock up on the Halloween treats, though. You'd feed 50 kids for less than €20.

Dunnes is the best. Large, bright airy supermarket with wide aisles and a multi-story carpark. The staff are always genuinely friendly and pleasant. Has everting I need (except peppermint extract, which one of my daughters is looking for - but then none of the supermarkets around here have it). So it gets most of my custom.

There isn't a SuperValu nearby, but each summer, I do end up doing most of my shopping in one when we're in our mobile home, and it's too far to drive to the next nearest supermarket (which up to recently was another SuperValue, but then an Aldi opened up near it). It is definitely more expensive, and doesn't have a great range, but it beats driving a 60km round trip to my locale Dunnes.

There's a Spar up the road from me that I go to when you need to grab something quick that you've forgotten or run out of, but don't want to go to the effort of heading all the way to Dunnes. You pay for the convenience.

No great experience of M&S. There isn't one in my county, nearest one is over an hours drive away, and even when I was in Dublin, I never bought more than a one-off speciality item in there. My dad was a fan, though. Singe elderly man who wanted the odd premium ready-meal. One of their target demographics, I suppose.

I find Supervalu very expensive, and would never do a full shop there. I only visit the local Supervalu now and again because I know their butcher, and he makes the most delicious stuffing by hand, and won't share his recipe! So I go in every now and again and get a few trays for the freezer.

I like M&S but would never do a full shop there. Treats only, but some of their own essentials range are good, like their frozen chips. I love their traditional coleslaw, and their instore bakery bread and baguettes.

I do my big shop in Aldi, and brands in Dunnes for the 10 for 50 vouchers.
