Creeping inedibility of supermarket food

I'm noticing this more and more there is literally hardly anything I can eat that comes from a supermarket

Fruit and veg and meat is about all that's left that is actually edible

Food scientists and accountants ruin almost every product. They should be shot.

I eat fruit, veg, meat, yogurt, bread, chocolate, crisps, potatoes, eggs, tinned stuff, fish and cheese. All from supermarkets.

Are you saying the supermarket is doing something to the crisps and chocolate that makes them somehow inedible to you, but the same crisps and chocolate sold in non-supermarket establishments are fine?

You can eat hardly anything from a supermarket? sounds like you need to see a gastroenterologist. A healthy human digestive system is easily robust enough to deal with the food from a supermarket.

I know a number of people who attributed their poor appetite and digestive discomfort to poor quality food and were subsequently diagnosed with intestinal cancers. Terminal in a couple of cases.

The supermarkets do have a massive influence on the quality of food they sell due to how they treat suppliers, what they specify, what gets shelf space imo ....

Good and bad ...

E.g. I don't think its a myth that most if not strawberries you buy nowadays are bred to look good rather than taste as nice as they could...additionally they were selected to be larger .....hence the turnip strawberries you can buy

Similarly some fruit is picked ( unripened) to be ripened in transit (understandably) by phosphene gas..so it could be quite some time between the picking and the eating...

Convenience meals.....pure shite but convenient

A majority of non-discerning customer willing to pay for crap have to shoulder some blame here too imo

In an ideal world, best way (possibly only way) to influence quality is vote with your feet/wallet

Seek out good stuff where possible, pay a decent price for that stuff and the supermarket won't be long responding when the sales/profit margin are threatened.

All that is packaged and packed in the supermarket is tasteless and full of salt best of avoiding. If possible go to a farm shop or fruit and veg shop, you get better produce there, same for meat. Meat from a proper butcher, not what you see in the supermarket, is a better product than what is in the supermarket. Yep its a bit of a pain having to go from shop to shop but it is worth it.

Ubbquittious

Stuff goes in and out of season in different parts of the world at different times. The supermarket provides you with an abstraction layer that you can purchase the same fruit and veg year round using money without having to worry your little soul about growing and transporting the produce. Some of the produce from certain places at certain times of the year tastes like sh1te but the supermarket still has to put it on the shelf to avoid complaints and a march to competing supermarkets

While I try to buy Irish where I can, when the Mediterranean potato season kicks in, from Cyprus I think, you can’t beat the quality of those compared to the Irish ones - pretty much every single one is perfect and they last much longer in the fridge too

The birds I raise for the oven don't get names. The kids all know where the chicken comes from - and it's not Mr Aldi and pals. The birds for eggs don't get names either.

But the 3 or 4 litres of chicken stock from a carcass will be a joy that will honour their memory. As well as the three good dinners.

In fairness some of the meat, chicken in particular, from your local butcher is likely to some from far off place like Thailand.

At least in the supermarket meat products are labelled with their country of origin.

I've made sure my kids are involved in the process. They know how to kill and process a chicken.

We only gave the cat a name. Didn't plan on eating it... Not yet anyway 🙀

The irish potatoes can be stored for up to 8 months in a fridge before packing for retailers.

Quality ? A lot depends on how the retailers store them in store and for how long.

The only 'fresh' potatoes you will get are the new season potatoes.

But , i hope you enjoy eating cypriot potatoes knowing you are contributing to the ruination of the irish growers.

No. Times were not hard. At all! we ate meat nearly every day and roast beef on Sunday and lacked for nothing. He had already killed a hen I had been given as a pet. Neither critter was intended to be else but a pet. He was not a kind man my father. Laughed when I was upset. My mother refused to cook the rabbit and he had to take to a neighbour. Used to shoot sparrows too for the fun of it and laugh. Long long ago but the memory stays. My meat what little I eat has to be anonymous! I love critters far too much to eat them. All long ago and far away...

Well, they should grow nice potatoes and not store them in a fridge for eight months. I remember when Aldi did the Arran Victories (Scotland) last year for a couple of weeks - unreal quality and a decent price - yet not enough Irish would buying them, going for the old reliable, half rotten roosters.

Thats why they are harvested in Aug/Sept and stored until needed.
