    Hi folks,

Looking to take a bike with me overseas as part of checkin baggage(not sports equipment with extra charge)and looking to find some bike boxes..is the local bike shop best bet? Any other suggestions or tips?

    Thanks

Local bike shops will always have sturdy boxes that new bikes have arrived in. Maybe ask for a second one for adding extra strength in the bottom/sides as well.

They'll also have push in fork protectors that come with bikes for shipping and foam padding to wrap around the frame tubes of your bike.

Ask them to show you how a bike arrives in a box and take pics, so you can pack yours correctly, to minimise risk of damage during travel; there's a knack to it.

They might even pack it for you for a small fee.

We do it for customers frequently.

This time of year, local amateur gardeners and horticulturalists snap up all our waste cardboard (literally as fast as we can put it out for recycling), for weed suppression in raised beds etc over the winter.

Most international flights allow it as part of your luggage allowance, just check the airlines conditions page.

Aerlingus it’s free if you’re flying to the US, but 50 quid each way for Europe flights

Loads such as British airways, Emirates, Singapore, Qatar etc...

As mentioned above it seems to apply outside of the EU but I also used it through Aer Lingus but is was due to the bike being in a case within the luggage allowance size and weight

    pedals off.

rear derailleur on biggest sprocket, to move the derailleur in as far as possible.

front wheel off and cable-tied to frame.

lots and lots of 1-inch pipe foam lagging...on every frame tube...to eliminate friction damage during transit.

brace fitted between front fork dropouts for protection.

handlebars swung down and sideways, so they loop under top tube, to stop fork movement.

    seatpost and saddle removed.

cable tie everything to eliminate movement, add copious amounts of bubble wrap.

    and even more foam lagging.

    release pressure from tubes/tyres.

    add even more foam lagging.
