Public service starting pay

    For someone coming from private sector, do you always start on the lowest point of the pay scale? Is there no credit taken into account for experience? That sounds a bit mad.

    In the civil service its always on the lowest point unless you've accused time in the public sector previously. I've heard in the public service there can be a bit more flexibility but it's very rare.

    ive seen exceptions made but its almost always sectoral as opposed to "i want to negotiate at this late stage"


    to be in the latter camp always struck me as a serious admission that one had not done their homework and possibly was not ready for the mental shift required tbh

    It's crazy and mostly the reason you only get high-level grades moving into the public sector. coming in as grade 5 will start you on 45k but coming in on grade 4 is like 27k. Most with exp in the private sector would be on more than 27k.
