How do I unsubscribe from a topic/ thread

There's a little blue banner or bookmark icon near the top right of the list of posts, just click that. Or each time you respond, there's a bookmark tickbox below the reply box.

Do I have to post a comment on the particular forum for the un-ticked "Bookmark this discussion" to take effect

From some simple testing, that does only submit a change when a post is submitted. The little blue banner option can be used anytime.

You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

"The little blue banner icon near the top right of list of posts" This only works for posts I started as the one I am looking to opt out is not in my list of discussions in my profile

I don't mean one on the My Discussions list. It's the one at the top of the thread itself you want to ubsub from.

It seems that the popup blocker on Firefox also takes out the blue bookmark. When I open in ME it shows up. Thanks for your help

I use AdblockPlus and it shows for me in Firefox, if that's any help in getting you both ads blocked and the options appearing.

Thanks, I have unticked that option for the moment but I presume this will stop all updates from any threads I posted in where I just want to stop certain ones.

Unlike the old vBulletin platform, bookmarking and notifications are two separate things on Vanilla:

• Bookmarking ensures they show up here: https://www.boards.ie/discussions/bookmarked
• Notification settings determine what discussions trigger emails and/or notifications in the boards menu bar

Unfortunately, on Vanilla, there's no way get notifications for a specific discussion. You can only select them for the groups of discussions listed on the preferences pages.

You can sort of approximate the old behaviour by turning off all notification settings except for "Notify me when people comment on my bookmarked discussions". Then you just get notifications for discussions that you specifically bookmark
