WFH Tax Relief - Issue with bills

    Hi,

I worked from home for all of 2021 and I was looking at claiming the tax credits back for it. But I have an issue with the bills.

Jan 2021 I was wil Eir for broadband. Every month Eir emailed me to say your bill was €X and to login to view the bill. once it was what I expected I didn't do anything else.

In June 2021 I moved to Pure telecom, who also just emailed every month to say bill was ready and to login to view. Bill was always €40 a month so never looked at the bills either.

But now it looks like I need the bills to claim the tax relief, but my login for Eir or Pure doesn't work anymore. Looks like I could ring eir to get the bills (which sounds awful) but they also apparently don't keep them for over 12 months so that rules them out completely. I haven't tried Pure yet. Would the email from Eir or proof of the DD payment be enough?

If not, is the only real option to login into the provider periodically and download the bills? It's kind of crazy to think paying a few euro a month for paper billing would have got me an additional €120 in tax back!

You don't need to submit any bills to claim the credit, but you might need them in the future if you are ever audited and Revenue asks you for proof of your expenses.

You do not need proof of your expenses unless your audited but you are required to keep your records for 5 years. A simple phone call with the phone companies would sort out this. Personally I don't think the WFH credit is worth it as its very minimal of a refund when done correctly such as dividing the house per room for the light and heat bill etc.

Why would you not download them when notified they were ready & store as a PDF?

That's good advice, if I had a time machine! I didn't realise I would need them or that wouldn't be able to access them historically.
