Resigning before signing a contract

    Hi

My new employer asked me to hand in notice at my current job before signing a contract. He wants me to start in two weeks time which is also the duration of the notice period I have to give at my current workplace. Although it's a big company it doesn't sound reasonable to me. What guarantee do I have that the job is mine? I only have his text messages. What would you advise me to do?

Absolutely do not do that. Totally unreasonable, stand your ground.

I want to see a contract and have all the information, then I can simultanously same day sign that and give notice. You can reassure that you don't intend to sit on the offer, but they need to make a formal (contract) offer for you to take it.

Next time, say your notice is 1 month (as is standard) give yourself a little wiggle room.

wait for the contract to be in hand and reviewed. otherwise you may find some BS has been pulled and you are out of 2 jobs and looking again.

never resign before reviewing a new contract.

    Hold your ground.

What you do to depart your current job is absolutely none of his business.

Sit tight, and look for a different new job with a less dodgy company.
