Carers Allowance

    Hi, I am wondering if someone could give me some guidance on this. I'm not working and am currently in receipt of DCA for two children under 10. My partner works full time and is on gross €55k per annum. We moved back into my parents last year to save for a house which is a long way away considering the mortgage rules. He has just under €50k saved but needs to at least double it to afford a 3 bed in our area where the kids have already started school.

    Is there a point in me applying for carers allowance? I understand I would qualify if I was single due to the DCA but my partners salary and savings makes me think I wouldn't quality.

    I haven't been able to work since my first son was born due to his disability.

    Thanks in advance.

    Yes apply, you may not get the full amount, but you get something.

    Plus you'll qualify for a free tv license and fuel allowance.

    back of the envelope figures;

    take €750 of your partners gross weekly income. (roughly 1050-750 = 300)

    then half this €300 gives €150. This is considered your weekly means

    so take €150 away from the max carers allowance of €336 (2 kids) = €186

    Note: you can have up to €50000 in savings before this starts to add to your means and effect your payment.

    You can also reduce your means by subtracting your partners PRSI, union dues, pension contributions and travel expenses

    Apply immediately. You don’t have to complete the medical report part of it as you have already been awarded DCA. If you apply now then it will be backdated and you’ll be included in the November lump sums and the double week in December.

    Have you tried putting your name on your local housing list and choosing a home from an approved housing bodies. they are building loads of new homes.

    And you qualify given your husbands income.

    Ring citizens info and they will go throught the means test. I earn roughly what your husband earns give or take and my wife is getting carers. She gets 194 per week. That is soon to rise to 208 after the budget. Savings wont be an issue until you go above 50k. Save cash would be my advice.

    Also get him to start a small pension avc. Literally they will give the money back to you as pension contributions arent taken into account for the means test. Get them to pay for the pension if you like.
