This seems to have blown up the American box-office, out-performing an estimated $12 million opening, to walk away with $19 million; tidy business for this time of year & as an adult Historical Epic. Unsurprisingly by its subject, there has apparently been a fair amount of "discourse" - mostly about the issue of slavery WRT to how rival tribes used to sell PoWs to the White Slavers, accusations of white-washing the more uncomfortable aspects. But then it's a Hollywood HIstorical Film so ... 🤷‍♀️

'tis the latest from The Old Guard's  Gina Prince-Bythewood by the by.

The history is interesting. The Portuguese white slaver “bad guy” in the movie was actually based on a real slaver who was an ally of the Dahomey kingdom. Looks like it was the British Empire which made ended their profitable Atlantic slave trade, 1852, although they continue practicing enslavement and slavery internally. the French later conquered them and banned it.

I think they will shout Wakanda, like a spin off Black Panther 😄
