Horizontal to Vertical radiator .... new pump needed?

    Hi,

In the middle of a kitchen renovation and originally had a single panel horizontal rad approx 1800x 800mm. We'd planned on replacing with a vertical rad 1800x450mm.

Now the plumber is saying he'd need to fit an upgraded pump as the current pipes are too small and wouldn't be able to pump the water all the way to the top of a vertical rad. The pipes look to be plastic and about 10mm outer diameter.

I've googled this and really can't see this issue noted anywhere. To be honest the horizontal rad we had was always kept low as the room is never that cold. Surely in a vertical rad the hot water will always rise to the top and flow would only be needed in the bottom anyway.

    Any advice welcome.

Vertical rads present more of a challenge if not installed incorrectly but your one certainly does not require a more powerful pump

Post details of your proposed rad, make etc

Off topic but what is the advantage of these vertical radiators?

Just looks really. For us we just wanted less width as dining set will be up against the same wall so give slightly more space.

I've got a similar vertical radiator. in/outlet are at the bottom. There was no need for any 'new pump' or similar, it just uses whatever pump is in the gas heater unit. Heating systems are a closed system (normally) so it's not like you have to pump water up a hill or something. If you have an upstairs the plumber's request makes even less sense.

Some have a lnternal baffle installed to direct the water upwards a very short distance from the flow/inlet pipe and just won't work reversed so be careful.

Thanks for all the comments. Fitted yesterday and all good.

Think someone was just looking to claw back a little cash from a inaccurately quoted job.
