Also, if you are gambling online or in a casino/shop they will or are meant to stop you if they think you have an issue. With this text lark they don't honestly know if a person is spending 50 euro of there very low wage on this 'game'

This is another area covered in the terms… You can enter twelve times max in a seven day period (Friday to Friday) meaning you can spend €30 max per week

I sometimes have Spin on in the background on my working from home days, however, its become unbearable lately as they never stop plugging the 'cash machine' competition.

At least the other stations in the Baeur group aren't as annoying about constantly pimping it.

It has to be off putting for listeners like me who have no interest in gambling.

I find myself listening to 98fm and fm104 a lot more lately, hopefully others are doing the same and Spin gsts the hint next time the listenership figures are published!

Would the number of rings correspond? Always thought that might be the biggest issue with it

In gaming and gambling you are 100% out of control of the result, form or otherwise.

In Cash Machine you are in control of knowing what the total cash amount is. People get called and don't know the answer.

I see the 'Summer' cash machine ends on Friday (30/09). Will there be a new competition? Surely.

Will there be a new entry number, like there was when the plain old cash machine became the Summer Cash machine? I wonder.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭Genghis

T&C's actually say 12 times *per draw* per week. So 5 draws per week is 60 entries.

There is also a different keyword for each station (Spin /Spin SW share one), each one a different entry route with the same 12 entry per draw limit ... so this may enable play 240 times a week!

Would imagine this is totally imprqctical to enforce - what happens the 13th time you enter a draw. Would your text be rejected? Would you be charged? Would your final text be easily taken out of the draw?

So I would think there is no practical limit, certainly not like there is a limit say on an online gambling account.

In cash machine you are not in control of whether you receive the call or not. That is the chance aspect you are gambling on.

I am surprised they haven't had a rollover to 100k plus yet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭Genghis

Probably know they are operating in a grey area, a six figure prize might bring scrutiny.

Yeh I think if it gets to the point of needing to go over €100k I think it’s more likely they’ll do a ‘guaranteed winner’ of an amount below that

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,872 ✭✭✭patrickc

Everytime Iano mentions it now, he basically says enter only if you want/can, its like its suddenly come to light its a form of gambling the way he says it.

Gambling is better than getting robbed and blackmailed by RTE every year.

Seeing as it is still getting plenty of mention on the Today FM thread, I thought I would bump this one up. Incidentally, in case you don't know, it is on all the Bauer Media owned Irish stations: Today FM, Newstalk, 98FM, Spin1038 and Spin SouthWest.

How long more, do you think, will they keep this going?

Global in the UK have had something similar going for a few years so expect it still have some life here.

It'll keep going as long as its making a profit.

Has their purchase of Red FM gone through yet?

They’re not near done with it yet

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

I gather it is subject to regulatory approval. Assuming that it goes ahead and the Cash Machine is still going at that stage, Red FM will be doing it too, no doubt, once they are officially handed over to Bauer Media.

I would imagine in five years time, this thread will still be running of people asking how much longer it’ll be here for. It’s been going for at least three years in the Bauer UK stations.

Well over 3 million in prize money give out so most likely 6 million odd of money spent on this but the BAI think its not gambling.

I wrote to them complaining about this, back in March.

"I’m writing to complain about your constant promotion of gambling on TodayFM and the go loud network of stations.

Both myself and my wife are not gamblers however we both believe that promotion of gambling with the todayfm cash machine is irresponsible. Waking up to gambling in Ireland should not be the norm.

Everyone knows how addictive gambling is and you are not only triggering that need for those addicted but also contributing to the promotion of it and therefore growth of a life altering addiction.

I understand that this has become a funding method for TodayFM, but I would urge you to reconsider how your business funds it’s operations.

This issue has been bothering me and my wife for quite some time in fact even the lottery promotion, horse racing tips etc in the past has bothered me, but I have finally decided that it is not responsible at all to be exposing my young family to this constant barrage of gambling promotion.

So after 20 years of listening to your show and the many others on TodayFM including Matt cooper, I will be switching off today fm and the go loud network of stations (who ever they are) until such a time that I learn your radio station acts responsibly and seeks an alternate funding method.

Providing a disclaimer to gambling is not a caveat to promotion."

    Response

"Thank you for your email in relation to the Cash Machine competition.

I register your dis-satisfaction with the competition and note the points and views you raise in relation to it.

In response, I would like to confirm that the competition is run in line with all relevant Broadcast Authority of Ireland and ComReg codes and is open to over 18’s only. In addition, there are limits in place on the numbers of entries people can make to the competition also. "

    My Final response

"Thanks for acknowledging my complaint. While what your organisation is doing may indeed be legal, there is a difference between what is legal and what is morally and ethically correct.

I think you will agree most people maintain relationships based on Morals and not legal basis. It was legal to promote and advertise cigarettes once too. "

Recently new laws around gambling advertising announced, just didn't sit right listing to them being discussed on 'the last word' when most of the air time on TodayFM seems to be promoting this cash machine.

Really hope it is decided that this falls into Gambling advertising and we won't have to hear it during day. My children always want to enter.

At this stage I do not switch on Today FM during the day and change if in car for any length of time.

Don't enter it as find the constant promotion sooooo annoying. Guess they collecting more on it then the TV Licence fees.

Just for clarity. It is not really the "Today FM" Cash Machine even though they call it that. As I alluded to in a previous post, the same Cash Machine is on all the Bauer Media stations - Today FM, Newstalk, 98FM, Spin1038 and Spin SouthWest (and maybe Red FM in the future). The "Go Loud network of stations" are these same stations.

I entered once early on, they started sending texts with the amount for each day, so you didn't even have to listen to the radio. Also offering a second entry to double your chances.

I see the amounts involved have increased, so more people are playing it (or playing twice per draw) . I wonder what their profit is per draw.

    €10000 for the winner , maybe €4000 or €5000 for themselves ?

You may as well go into the bookies and bet on the three numbers for the various lotto draws daily. Or the slot machines at least kick back out a certain % of what is put in. Seems to be no such clarity with the 'cash machine'

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

As far as I can make out, the jackpot (or "cash machine" if you prefer!) goes up every time someone misses the phone call. If a call is missed, other people that entered for that one are automatically included for the next one. The call is once per day - at 3pm. There would be no point in me taking part anyway as I would be very likely to miss that call at that time!

Incidentally, it is normally Barry Dunne who makes the call. He is a presenter on 98FM.

Not really. You can have and you do need a level of information to make decisions , knowledge of form , odds , percentages etc.

Gambling and punting are different behaviours.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,951 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

As @2smiggy said, the amounts seem to be getting bigger, even not taking roll overs into account.

I think I clearly remember when the CM started it had sums like 3000, 4000 etc...now if its won it seems to start off again at a much higher level than 3 or 4k.

To me this is a deliberate attempt to entice more people to enter.

Is there any way to find out how many people have entered on any given day? Even with scratch cards you know or can find out what the odds of winning are. For the cash machine you’re spending your 2.50 with no idea what the odds or chances of winning are.
