Thought a thread on this might be helpful coming into the winter, similar to the oil thread:

Correct, you can thank Eamon Ryan and the cardon tax introduced in May for the increase.

The carbon tax increase last May added about 70c

Coal is an internationally traded commodity and prices move constantly. It is also traded in US dollars

With gas gone into the stratosphere many countries have turned back on their coal burning electricity generators.

Last December a metric tonne of coal cost $150 on commodity markets - this effective is what the coal mines were getting. The dollar was at $1.13, so the Euro cost was about €132 per ton. 25x40kg bag in a tonne, so net cost price €5.28. (then add shipping, bagging distribution, carbon tax, vat & retail markup and you are circa €16-€18 for bog standard coal)

Today a metric tonne is $421. The dollar is at parity, so €420 for tonne. That's €16.80 per 40kg bag at the coalmines in bulk lots of thousands of tonnes.

Carbon tax is €4.28 on a bag.

Then you have shipping from the mines, (gone up in price too) bagging, distribution and retail and then vat.

And that brings you to €35-€40 for a standard bag.
