Myself and wife to be are getting married in 3 weeks. We have our pre marriage course booked with a few months for online this coming Saturday. Our priest said we had to book it but didn't matter about when ot takes place, that it could even be after the wedding, once its done.

So, is it just a box ticking exercise for the church to have? What exactly do we get from it, bearing in mind we already have 2 kids and a house and been together for 15 years?

For anyone who done it recently, how much of the day does it take up and what if we get pulled away to other stiff with kids during the day?

We did it during lockdown. We were together 17 years with a 9yo at the time so like yourselves it's a bit of a waste in that regard - but I can see how it would be useful and even valuable for couples who aren't together long, who would be devout and not co-habit or possibly even have sex before marriage. I don't think we learned anything we hadn't already figured out ourselves but it was grand.

We had to do it before the wedding and the priest said unless we did the course, the wedding couldn't go ahead.

The good thing is that their online version is much shorter. It was origially 1.5 days in person but that became just under 3 hrs on Zoom. (no price reduction for the online shorter one, mind!) It was grand, we didn't have to say much if we didn't want to, and they don't expect you to share stuff with the group - the exercises you do, you mute and do as a couple together privately. Because we were doing it in lockdown, I wasn't going to try to source childcare for the few hours - but our lad was old enough to put in another room with snacks and a movie and check in on him during breaks.

If children can occupy themselves for an hour or so, you may not need them minded, but if they are a bit younger it might be no harm for someone to keep an eye on them downstairs while you two do the course.

We were supposed to do ours next weekend and that got cancelled due to the co-ordinator being unavailable. Then given the online option over a friday night and saturday - shorter than the in person session originally planned. That's been pulled now and looking like it will be done some sunday afternoon in the next few weeks. Have to say, it's been a pain in the arse having to constantly reschedule and rearrange plans when we'd it booked months in advance. Glad to hear it will be boxed off in a few hours though!
