I was planning on changing the car, but I have decided not to now as I work from home and don't use it as much.

I would like to upgrade to get apple car play, which I am happy to install myself but I have a few questions.

I've looked around a few beemer forums but can't find what I am looking for

    1. Recommend a unit to buy (lots on Ali express but would prefer a local supplier if possible).
    2. I presume that I would need to replace the screen if I wanted touch screen functionality. I have the pro nav widescreen
    3. Can you just switch back over to the existing in car systems?
    4. Do the steering wheel controls, etc still work?
    5. Are the worth it?

I attempted this just over a year ago with a 2016 F36. Bought a Roadtrip box on eBay & installed it myself. Andream, Bimmertech etc all the boxes are more or less the same.

2-yes you’ll need to replace the screen if you want a touchscreen

3- yes, with a nudge of the IDrive controller

4- yes, they worked when the unit worked, which wasn’t all the time

5- in my case, the box kept crashing the head unit, so I’d have no screen at all (nav, radio etc) until I restarted the car. Updating the software didn’t work. I eventually had to remove the box & give up. OTOH there are hundreds of happy posters on bimmerpost forums who’ve had no issues.

there is a guy in Clonmel who will source and install the slightly later version of the BMW head unit that has CarPlay as standard/has the processing power & memory to run CarPlay. Not cheap though. Look for M Coding on Facebook

MCoding in Clonmel is excellent. I had a retrofit on a previous car and some work on the current one. You’re going to be looking at a 4 figure sum but any of the plug in boxes or replacement units are only a half arsed job to be honest.

I'm considering one of the IMI-1000 kits from Integrated Automotive for my car (non BMW). Just have to bite the bullet. I've contacted them and they reply quickly with any queries by email.
