Are Tatoos Naff?

On holidays in Italy and have gotten to know the English couple beside us at the pool really well. When they met each other, their kid’s names and dates of birth, the dates their parents died, what football team they support.

I haven’t spoken to them once. Just read their tatoos.

I occasionally might see a T-shirt that I think looks pretty cool. I have yet to see a tattoo and think, wow, that’s cool, unique or interesting.

Do some people regret their tatoos or consider them an important part of their identity?

I don't think we've ever had a thread on tattoos in AH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,973 ✭✭✭SafeSurfer

Well in that case it should be a good opportunity for people to share their opinions.

Also unusual for a thread here to be bitching about other people's personal preferences that have no effect on anyone else. A refreshing change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,755 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

Most of them are naff tbh. Even the arty ones

What looks good on taut youthful skin will look horrendous when older.

Invest in long sleeve shirt companies because a boom is coming.

Oh yay, another tattoo thread. Just what AH needs.

Tattoo's distinguish scumbags from normal people.

The fact you use the word naff tells us all we need to know about you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,419 ✭✭✭corner of hells

I think the OP might want us to ask about his holiday in Italy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,973 ✭✭✭SafeSurfer

    Yes you are absolutely correct.

The use of one word reveals everything one could possibly wish to know about an individual, like some all revealing shibboleth!

So tell us. Is Naff a gay phrase from the 1960s, a French phrase from the 1980s or an Italian phrase from the 1950s?

I once saw a guy with 'eire' across the top of his back, in an old traditional front. He had a strong NI accent. I felt like asking him what happened to the fada, but thought better of it!

Yes, they look crap on most people IMHO

I have several tattoos, I neither regret them nor are they an important part of my identity. They are just something I like and have liked for a long long time.

They are visible when I want and can also be covered. I dont particularly care what anyone thinks of them but if someone has questions about them I'll answer. However if someone tries to enforce their view of them on me, they'll be quickly told how little I care about it.

Well to answer your question OP.

I think some people regret there tattoos but the majority would not. Providing they didn't get something stupid when they were blind drunk.

In years to come will people regret getting I'd say some might but I'd say they'd always be improving technology to remove them.

In general tough people are fairly happy with them.

I find them the artsy ones attractive on women though i have none myself. Having said that, a blown out butterfly ya picked up in Ibiza just looks silly.

First they came for the socialists...

Maybe you should try talking to people instead of staring at them from your high horse.

Might result in a more fun trip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,372 ✭✭✭✭walshb

I find most them hideous, personally.

The likes a Beckham's and Ed Sheerhan's, for example, absolute scruffy looking!

Bad ones are, the prison-grade crudely drawn kind.

Flegs and Brit/Provo stuff are seldom a good look.

Common and overdone ones, doggy paws on tits/tramp stamps/Asian characters which probably read 'fried rice'.

Most will age poorly, like the clothes you wore in your teens and 20s will look odd on you when you're in your 30's and 40's. Unique, ageless tattoos are where it's at, not following a design trend.

Sounds like a pretty low-end resort. Or one frequented by the families of footballers.

Oh you mean like judging people from what they have written or have written on them?

I don't have a problem with them, and only haven't gotten any because they would interfere with my work (perspectives in Asia regarding tattoos matter). Might get one for my shoulder blade when I reach 50. It's always been something that I wanted but was just inconvenient.

Still, I've friends who either had them, and/or were tattoo artists in Asia, and I've seen some beautiful work. Also a lot of people maintain their tattoos, getting them touched up, or whatever.. I find in western countries people get tattoos and then just let the fade/flake away.. My ex had a large tattoo at the base of her back of a Chinese dragon, and it was gorgeous work (lovely back too)..

So, yeah, obviously it depends on the style of tattoos, whether they're amateur or professionally done, and whether they're maintained/touched up every decade or so.

I think most tattoos are awful, maybe a few small tattoos look OK it think anyone who has a large tattoo on arm, neck , leg look awful

They show this person is an idiot , chav or someone who has absolutely no taste. It's funny people get a tattoo of their girlfriends name and break up after 6 months if you look at crime documentarys most criminals have tattoos

If you get a tattoo it should not be visible when you are wearing a shirt

I thought naff had been replaced by cringe

I think some people get a lot of tattoos as a way of showing off , eg i, m so daring, different, creative,

People are strange heard on a podcast Frank skinner met a male fan who had a tattoo of Frank's face on his chest,

Some people get a tattoo of a random Chinese word cos it looks nice I think all tattoos over a certain size are awful even if the art is of a high standard

    Yes, they are naff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,251 ✭✭✭Andrewf20

Yes I think that are naff just like m performance stickers on bmws and those 3d number plates.

Why is that? Crikey, there's far worse said!

Anyway, depends on the tattoo/person. They can look great imo - but others don't like them at all, and that's grand too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 917 ✭✭✭Mr_Muffin

You can tell a lot by a person's tattoos:

If they have a tribal tattoo on their shoulder/upper arm there is a 99% chance they were a plasterer or block layer during the Celtic tiger

If they have a tramp stamp there is a 86% chance that person has slept with over 150 men

If they have a sleeve tattoo there is an 89% chance they are under 35 and that the sleeve has a clock or angel in the design

If they have a tattoo on their neck there is a 100% chance they are on social welfare and have at least 3 children, of which 2 will end up in prison

Tattoos used to be the preserve of tough ne'er-do-well, undesirable types. Now, the wussiest people imaginable have them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭cuttingtimber22

Some are, some are not. That Marty Whelan one is definitely naff.

That's exactly what they want you to do.

    It's a cry for attention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

IF you can see someones tattoo from 15 foot away its too big, anyone i see with a sleeve tattoo i presume they are a boxer, wrestler, or a criminal ,drug user or an egomaniac ,or someone who is self obsessed , like women who get lip injections or botox injections trying desperately to look like a kardashian or some idiot on love island. i have no problem with someone who gets a tattoo on their arm, back ,neck if its small .

i have no idea why someone gets a large tattoo on their arm or their neck ,its like look at me, i,m cool, tough, am i not cool, i,d say 90 per cent of men in prison have a tattoo.Tattoo,s used to be mostly popular with ,gangsters, criminals, punks ,artists , weirdos, serial killers ,

eg a sign of someone extreme who wants to be outside normal society.

The tramp stamp on the 23 year old Texan babe who was playing pool with me in Salthill last month was a work of art tbh.

It really suited everyone in the pub, it was a popular design.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭AllForIt

I see it's become a fashion to have them on your calves nowadays. Which I usually see of guys wearing shorts in cold weather walking an aggressive looking dog.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,722 ✭✭✭PoisonIvyBelle

I guarantee you no-one who has any cares whether anyone else thinks they're naff.

Nobody put it better than that comedian who said "would you put a bumper sticker on a ferrari?".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,940 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Pretty crap analogy because very very few people are " Ferraris" & most cars look better with , new alloys, spoiler, front splitter ,lowered, so on & so on ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,244 ✭✭✭Brid Hegarty

Well not really, given that there's nothing wrong with aspiring to be a 'ferrari', or having as much respect for yourself as if you were a ferrari; i.e, get a good haircut, get in shape, dress well, speak well, and then (depending on your physique and looks) you're probably not too far off being a ferrari. It's a great comparison between trashy cars and the (lets face it) 'more likely to be' trashy people that get tatoos.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,419 ✭✭✭corner of hells

I'm quite happy to be trashy with tattoos rather than be passing judgement on people on the basis of their appearance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 715 ✭✭✭Mac_Lad71

I agree with whoever said that tattoos were stupid people's way of letting everyone else know how stupid they are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,589 ✭✭✭touts

As an employer tattoos are an essential part of the recruitment process. I have weeded out many candidates within 5 seconds of them walking into the room on the basis of "If they are stupid enough to do that to themselves I'm not leaving them any where near my business".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,940 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

So getting a tattoo is not respecting yourself ?

Why do you think trashy people only get tattoos , I'm not trashy at all and have several ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,940 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

IS there a certain type of tattoo that makes you this or just any tattoo, guys like Jack Dorsey , Jen Shu lian all the way back to Theodor Roosevelt had tattoo .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 795 ✭✭✭Alias G

Every second clown has a tattoo these days so yes, I think they can be considered naff at this stage. I picked up two in my late teens/early twenties which is a few decades ago at this stage. I went to the expense, effort and pain of getting one of them removed but not sure if I will bother getting the 2nd one removed. It can't typically be seen anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,560 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

    100% naff to my eyes

But nobody is forcing me to get one
