Hi all, I have a few questions about taking parental leave from work and was wondering if anyone would know the answers.

    1. can anyone with a child take this leave? If your 9 year old child is in school until 2.30pm every day, can you still take 6 months unpaid leave or is it only for sick children?
    2. would you be able to move abroad for the 6 months or do you have to be living in Ireland?
    3. how does an employer know if you’ve used it or not in a previous employment?
    4. is it common to take this leave or do most parents not bother

Rules differ depending on employer, they have a right to refuse your request. In my situation must be taken in blocks minimum a week at a time. I usually take 2-3 weeks over summer while school holidays. Then have my annual leave for days during the year.

Know people who use a day or half days per week they work HSE.

Don't think there is a way to know exactly how much parental leave you have taken previously.

You can take parental leave up until the child is 12, they don't need to be sick.

I took parental leave for a while. I took 2 hours/day to mind my daughter. Mu wife was working evenings so it meant we could avoid paying childcare.

There's a few where I work taking it. Usually only 1 day a week.

If your child is in school you are not taking care of them so that wouldn't qualify. If your employer thinks you are abusing it they can cancel the leave. Whether or not they would grant you the leave anyway is another question.

Can you go abroad? I don't know. If the child was going with you maybe.

It's linked to your PPS number - you have 26 weeks entitlement up until your child is 12. You don't get 26 weeks in every employment. So if you move job, you are still only entitled to the remainder of your leave up to a total of 26 weeks.

I believe you were given this link in the last thread you started about parental leave https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employment/employment_rights_and_conditions/leave_and_holidays/parental_leave.html

There are also links at the end of that page about the relevant departments you can ring to ask all the questions you want to ask.
