I have the GT 5008, great car, reliable and reasonable on juice

They are both mechanically the same car.

Renault Grand Scenic is worth a look at too:

    Great help in deciding.

OP, take the Peugeot any day over the Citroën. Reliability and design are better.

On the OP's budget of 18k the Citroen is a newer fresher design than the Pegueot. The OP cannot get a current generation 5008 for 18k. Mechaniclally one is no different to the other so I really don't see what the problem is by claiming it's unhelpful mentioning it. The 5008 probably shades it on build quality but the packaging, tech and safety equipment is old compared to that of the newer Grand C4. At the end of the day they are both French cars from the PSA group so reliablity is not going to be substantial on one over the other.

OP, another one worth looking at is the Ford Grand C-Max. The rear doors are sliding rather than opening which makes them handier if your putting in or taking out small people in the rear:

Thank you bazz26, only thing is that I want 3 individual seats in the middle row and it appears that only the 5008 and grand picasso have them.

I'm addled from looking at cars online right now. Saw a nice 161 5008 in Kerry but it had 4 previous owners and was imported from uk

ADDLED is a good word/ we've all been there......i wouldn't be too concerned about number of previous owners ( you know that joke about just ' 1 previous owner'...it was Heartz). UK imports are a whole different ballgame re insurance/ true history. As another poster rightly says 18K isn't going 'far' as regards new generation 5008's. That said the 5008 is a superior car to the Citroen. Mrs Mc Carthy has her second 5008 & it really is a fantastic motor.....it genuinely is the best car we've ever had regards space/ economy/ all the 'toys' & a beautiful drive. I cannot find any fault with the Peugeot & much prefer it to Citroen having had both..... my only gripe about the 5008 is the list/ purchase price....... still sends a shiver down spine when I think of the outlay on that motor.....but that's just the 'way' of it nowdays.......all car prices ( new & 2nd hand) are kinda inverted ( perverse even) in 2022.

Starting to look at a Ford galaxy now, although not sure if I'd get 3 car seats in like I would with other 2 car choices

4 owners isn’t a whole lot on a 6 year old car. Insurance is the same on a UK or Irish car. And Its actually harder to find the true history of Irish cars than it is UK ones.

I don't know what to do

Looking at spending 18 k on a 161 car or so

Or spending 12 k on a 13 or 14 car with similar mileage. I would drive about 40 k a year. 4 years of driving and would have very high mileage and no chance of resale value.

I drive a 211 New type 5008, cannot fault it at all. My kids are, all 3 are 18 and under and all grown up but there is absolutely plenty of room for them and has meant a much more relaxed experience for everyone.

I have been driving 508's since 2013, 3 of them infact and the on 1 I got in 17 had Android Auto.

The boot space with the 5008 though is astronomical and loves to cruise along on the motorway

Have you driven either the Citroen or the MPV version of the Peugeot yet?

The cheapest SUV version of the 5008 on Done deal is 25K so way over your budget.

Also if your going to be travelling 40K km a year id be looking for a low mileage one but you may have to travel a bit to get one.

    Haven't driven anything yet

Aren't the 141 up 5008 SUV with 3 individual middle seats?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The 2010 to 2018 5008 is not a SUV, it's a MPV. The 5008 only became a SUV crossover with the newer generation model from mid 2018 onwards. Both generations would have 3 individual seats in the middle row. The cheapest newer model is 26k.

If you havent driven anything yet, I would suggest driving a few different makes/models rather than just looking at cars on the net. You may not like the Peugeot or Citreon once you drive them.

Friends of mine have the Kia Carens which is also within your budget. They have 3 kids under 8 and love it.

Do you need isofix on all 3 seats or would isofix on the outer 2 suffice? Depending on your kids ages isofix may not be a big deal.

had both, peugeot by a country mile. Citroen's comedy electrics would make you apoplectic with rage.

    Any opinion on vw touran?

well put together, bomb-proof mechanics. If you're not too worried about brand, buy a Skoda. Exact same car but cheaper.

Wish I could afford a scoda 7 seater.

Your budget leaves little options so I would look at the Multimac system which can fit 3 kids in most regular cars.

I recently bought a 16 Citroën as, like you, I wanted to fit three across the back. Was coming from a 12 qashqai.

Drove the new Dacia 7 seater, Peugeot 5008 (152), Ford Galaxy (152) and liked them all. Dacia not being available in diesel counted that out immediately. Toss up between the other three, didn't feel as comfortable driving the Galaxy but can't really pin point what I didn't like about it. Eventually I got a better financial deal on the Citroën and it had less milage than the others. Only have it since May but very happy so far. The space and spec suits my family. Boot space and being able to move seats forward and back individually is fantastic. Is also a comfortable drive.

My advice is to get a drive and feel ofa few cars, even if not the exact model/spec you are looking for to see what you think. Best of luck with your search.

Ford S Max. Its basically a Galaxy with a slightly lower rear roof line but still plenty of Room for 3 children in the rear. They are nicer to drive and more stylish than the Galaxy too. Still a big car do.

Opel Zafira Tourer is also worth a look.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
