Hi folks, what the best time of year for taking cuttings / propagating. Is there a different time of year for specific shrubs, plants etc. ?

    Thanks.

Now is good for quite a few things, though off the top of my head I couldn't give you a full list. Roses are now and quite a lot of flowering shrubs that you can take some semi-ripe cuttings from. That's wood that is not bright green/just grown, and not the mature stuff from last year, the stuff in between. Keep them watered and give them a plastic bag/bottle cover till they show signs of new growth.

Some plants do better from root cuttings. Some will take in water on the windowsill, some are better with a heel (pull down on a bit of newish growth and get the little join that comes off the main stem. In all cases cut off a good bit of the top growth and some (most) of the leaves. Certainly take off any flowers or buds. Rooting powder helps for most things.

Its a science and an art, give it a go and learn as you fail/succeed.
