DCM race series -Fingal 10k Sunday 17th July 2022

Its looking like a balmy 20°C for the race kick (9.30am). Plenty of sunscreen and light tops the order of the day. Has anyone run this race? From the route map it looks OK, a bit of shade when the course moves off the dual carrage way into the country roads but mainly in the sun all the way. The last km is interesting, up watery lane and down bridge street to the finish asks a bit just at the end.

Anyone have opinions of warm ups when its warm? I live about 3k from the start line and was thinking about jogging down but with the heat forecasted I might just get dropped down and stand in the shade of the pavillions till the start gun

Where is the best place to park? I was thinking of leaving it in the retail park at B&Q and walking to start?

Thats were I would park if I was coming from out of town. Its about a mile to the start line and an easy exit to the motorway after.

The Pavillions is very close. 2 hours free parking and loads of space.

Looks like the first km is uphill, then 4 downhill, then 1 uphill, 2km down hill, 1.5 uphill and a few hundred meters at the end downhill.

There's a horrible drag in the last KM so be aware of it Watery Lane its called. Doesn't look bad on paper, but I always find it tough (Live local so know it well)!

Anyone know if there are pacers for this race? No mention on the site bit the 10mile and Half in the series usually do.

That was a hot one this morning! Decided very early on to ease off the pace and just coast around it.

Very much enjoyed the route. Gone are the days when you get a souvenir in the goody bag 😂 I remember doing these races before and there would always be a mug or a water bottle or whatever in the bag. Not anymore it seems!

Great race as usual on a lovely course. I really felt the heat in the last mile with those little hilly bits. Was very glad to get re-hydrated afterwards.

So enjoyable, fantastic route and support. Plenty of smiles.

Would have been perfect except for a slight hamstring pain from about 5 mile, got carried away on the home straight and sprinting didn't help. Iced up now. Might hit the beach for some cold therapy later 😜

My buddies from the US won't believe me when I said it was so warm here they were cooling people down with a fire hose!

edit: also rookie move on my part to run through the water while wearing a cotton tee, was like wearing a weighted vest then for the next km 😅

Well organized except one major gripe which was the 15 min delay at the start. In the age of Covid you simply CANNOT have thousands of people compressed together for 15 mins longer then necessary. Major mistake.

Great day out yesterday, despite the heat. Highlights definitely the lady with the garden hose, and the fire crew (who looked like they were have a GREAT time!) hosing down runners - little details that made a HUGE difference in the heat

Same gets done in South Africa due to the heat - sometimes the race organisers (I've run a few where they had an irrigation system like setup with an 'arch' of sorts that you run under and glorious water spray cools you off) but usually just supports who live along the race route.

I remember a few times at Limerick, Cork, and Waterford (all usually very hot full/half marathons) where the volunteers at the aid stations, while cleaning up bottles, will offer to squirt passing runners (rather than just dumping the water onto the ground) - makes such a difference on a hot day (and yeah squirting from used water bottles is a no-no since covid, and yeah technically is gross, but in the [literal] heat of the moment you don't care, cooling is cooling :D )

I heard somebody say that the leaflet said 9.30 but event on Facebook said 10am so people were arriving late. Not sure how true it is and I didn't see many arrive after 9.30 when we were waiting.

The wait was inconvenient but not a risk so a bit of perspective required.

Probably the easiest park in Ireland to get to by public transport, bike sharing services, taxis, race series shuttle buses, walking/running.

There will be loads of parking within the park on the day as there always is at that early hour.

I think DCM were just obliged to state that in order to comply with permits.

1000s of people tightly packed for an extra 15 mins in the midst of the high point of an Omicron wave poses a significant risk to competitors. I'll forgive a lot, but not that. The fact that this probably didn't even occur to them makes it even worse in my view.

Start the race on time. It's not hard.

There will be NO parking in Phoenix Park on race day. A bike park will be provided close to the start area, so bring your bike. - from the Marathon website, so most of those car parks will be closed.

So you are telling me the Gardai will be manning all of the gates around the park from 7:30 that morning?

As long as the roads are open to through traffic there will be parking, also the North Rd isn't being used by the race and will be open to parking.

People were packed together on a windless morning for 15-20 mins longer than they would have been if the race started on time. Now some eejits believe "Covid is over" (no arguing with those I guess). But if an event organizer is not going to care enough to even consider that delaying a packed crowd for 15-20 mins on a windless day, causes a much greater risk of Covid than starting a race on time then I must consider if I am going to be risking that situation in their races again. In fact it's a question I will be asking organizers in future before participating. Not too much to ask surely?
