Audi A6 using oil

I've a 2014 Audi A6 2.0 tdi automatic and it's asking for oil top ups on a pretty regular basis the last year or so. I haven't really monitored the frequency but it asked for a litre of oil yesterday and at a guess I've done this within the last month to 6 weeks, so you're talking somewhere in the region of 2000kms and it has used a litre of oil.

I don't mind the price of the oil, its not that expensive but could it be a sign of an underlying problem?

My mechanic says there is no sign of a leak and apart from topping up the oil, the car has been absolutely flawless in the near 6 years I have owned it. Long term average 40 mpg with mixed use so that's fine, engine not struggling or anything. Just concerned slightly about it presumably burning oil.

Likely the piston rings are gone. This is a common problem on these VWs I believe VW redesigned them. My advise is switch to 5w 30 or better 40 if your using 0w30

These thinner oils were only brought in due to lowering frictional losses but there are downsides too...

Thanks for advice, it's 5w30 I use in it. My mechanic replacing the brakes on it at the weekend and it has nct in August so I'll get him to check it out.

Almost time for a change too, I've had it 5 years and I still have a longing for a 5 series or a6 phev for some reason!

You can alternatively add Millers heavy duty oil stabiliser to your existing oil. It should stop the oil burning but the underlying problem will still be there. I believe its a very expensive fix (if it is indeed the piston rings)

Definitely have issue . have 2.0tdi 2013 with 150000 miles on it and it uses no oil between sevices every 10k would be still read full on the dipstick after 10k run

I've 130,000 kms only on mine. Something probably wrong although my mechanic who has never once set me wrong doesn't think its a big problem. No symptoms other than the warning light coming on, drives lovely. At the stage now where I fancy a change anyway so it might all work out

130.000km is very low mileage for it to be drinking oil my car double it and nothing between oil changes. I see your mechanic view what is he going to tell you yeah it needs a engine rebuild or like what he saying "it is what it" is basically drive on and keep it topped up of oils as there no point in spending few thousand on a rebuild

Just shame about whoever buy it after you as it bit of pup

LoL I don't know if you'll remember the old ford cortina , I remember some of those cars during the early 80's absolute oil guzzlers....

The question was, is she drinking much oil, or illle....

I've a 2008 Audi A6 TFSI that I've owned for 10yrs and in all of that time it has consumed oil.

The frequency of top-up tends to correlate with the level of use of the loud pedal, but popping in half a litre every 3 months or so has now become 'normal' for me.

I mentioned to dealer service centre at one stage and once they had quizzed me about frequency and volume required they said - "Yeah, that sounds about right."

Yeah I just think it's part of life for my particular car too. Its since been to mechanic for new brakes and he checked everything out, no leaks anywhere. He's bmw trained and owns one of the bmw independent garages you hear mentioned here from time to time but he rang a colleague that knows audis inside out and he says he does see it and not necessarily a problem if no other symptoms. Passed nct for 25 months last week too so not sure what to do with it. It's worth a decent whack of what I paid for it 4 years ago (thanks covid/brexit/inflation) but unfortunately everything else newer has skyrocketed too for same reason.

Probably just keep it, I can't find any value in market at all no matter where I look.

I said at one stage that my 2009 A4 didnt burn much . About half a litre in 10k miles. Ive 265k miles on mine and ive had it since 130k miles and thats always the trend with it

Only to be told that the level of oil on a dipstick isnt the best indication that a modern diesel car isnt burning oil.

The car could be doing a lot of regens which would end up topping up the oil with fuel

I've a A4 1.8 TFSI and it requires a couple of top ups between services (no sign of a leak). Never had to do it with any previous car I've had. Otherwise it runs fine.

Yup that 1.8 engine likes a drop of the old oil. My TT defo required a few top ups between services as well.
