Irish salaries stagnant since 2008?

    Whilst many salaries may not have gone up much between 2008 and now, that same level of salary is now subject to Universal Social Charge which wasn't in place in 2008. That takes a big chunk of spending power away. My take home pay is roughly the same now as it was in 2008, but my salary has gone up approx. 16% in that time.

    Inflation is not the only thing which drives wage increases.


    Labour is a service you provide, for a fee. For some reason companies don't think that supply and demand should apply to the labour market, and that they are doing you a favour in employing you.

    There are shortages in key areas where companies still think that offering stagnant wages is going to attract talent.

    Depends in the sector.

    If you're in the public sector, it has stagnated.

    If you're in tech, it has exploded.

    If you're in professional services, it has probably doubled.

    I can’t comment on your general statement but personally my salary has increased by 20% in 8 years - same company/same role!

    Yes, but you're eight years more experienced and presumably a lot more productive.
