How much did the EGR replacement cost? You can simply get the EGR removed from the ECU and the engine light will not come back. I had the exact same issue with a Ford Focus and the engine light never came back after blanking it from the ECU. Think it cost €150.

About the clocking, it could just be a km/miles mix up, can you post a screenshot?

Did you have the garage you brought it to confirm that it was clocked?

Looks like he ultimately went private, so no (as he knows) come back.

At this stage I'd probably bring it to a main dealer.

It's a pity that the young lad got off to a bad start but he will have learned a lesson about buying.

Over a lifetimes motoring it won't amount to much more than an amusing anecdote.

As for the car, even after fixing it you will still be in budget .

Get it sorted and let him drive on.

If it passed the NCT what's to worry? What proof is there that it has been clocked?

I have had both an EGR issue and ECU issue. EGR I was told a new one would be expensive or I could just get it blocked. I did this, though the e mgmt light stayed on permanently.

ECU, my wipers and heater stopped working so I got a second hand one. Only thing is it came from a car with spot lights so the ECU thinks the spot light is gone so again the engine management light is perma on.

If that's the only issue, it's no big deal. Annoying as the seller seems to have purposely turned off the light just to sell it. I would try ringing the seller and tell them and say you want 150/200 euro back. No right to it but worth a try.

Having the engine management on all the time is no problem. When you come to sell the car in 2 or 3 years time the car will be coming on 14 or 15 years old and people don't expect these cars to be faultless.

I mean did he have it checked when he got a service done at his own garage, after he bought the car, and had some work done to try and remedy the problem.

If it's clocked, it will need some work done sooner than you might expect.

Friend of mine had a timing belt snap, and he thought it had plenty of milage left. I put a reader on the car, and it showed that it had been clocked, and had gone 14k past the recommended replacement milage. Expensive lesson for him. But he was in a similar position to the OP at the time when looking to buy.
