Just popped open my coolant tank and noticed the coolant was a whitish colour which i found strange. When i start the car in mornings a red coolant light comes on but quickly goes out after a couple of minutes. Just wondering now could this be connected that there is a problem. Its a Yaris btw. Thanks

Check your oil and water levels before starting car If it low top it up as water will do if low and keep an eye open and nose for any sweet taste in your mouth due to a leak from system.

Is the level ( of coolant) correct- between the min / max indicator??

When was car last serviced??? .... was coolant changed / is the CORRECT coolant in tank??

Sorry coolant light is green on startup and goes out obviously after a couple of mins when engine heats up I presume. Coolant level is ok, I have never touched it as only bought the car a few months back. Not too sure when last service was also. Oil levels havent moved since i bought the car its really good on oil and how do I check water levels sorry for what is probably a stupid question. I just found it strange that the coolant colour is white never seen that before.

White colour might be an empty bottle as low and when running it gets circulated as coolant cant change colour

On closer inspection the coolant colour is more clear than white. Ill flush the system and put new coolant in better safe than sorry thanks all.

That's the ticket.......flush out well.....then bring the coolant to roughly half way between min/ max level markers. When you go to motor factors/ halfords get the CORRECT coolant ( there's several different ones for diesel/ petrol engines) but try & get the RED one as you'll find it's that bit easier to check. Then, after a hundred kms or so check again........ the level & the colour is what you'll be looking for
