Anyone planning on sailing down the east coast tomorrow to see the start of the Round Ireland @ Wicklow?

If so, where are you leaving from and when?

Not heading down myself, but for anyone going, they'll be pushing into a tide for most of the way down!

There's also big hole looking like it's gonna appear just after the race starts, so they might all be bobbing about for the afternoon!!

Better fill up the fuel tank so!

Was in wicklow last night. Club wasn't very busy and not about of boats in wicklow which I think was disappointing

Looks like most of the fleet now just travel down for morning of the race from one of the marinas up the coast….

Saw just three boats heading south mid morning in Killiney Bay. One motoring, one motorsailing(?) and one just about filling a spinny. The 'Pride of London' is at anchor out there now.

Looks like Kuka 3 well ahead now, just off Belmullet at the moment, with Green Dragon next, quite a bit behind, west of Clew Bay. Majority of the fleet west of the Clare coast.

And looking at the forecasted winds for this afternoon, they'll both be over the swells and far away fairly soon!!!

Going to be interesting to see how the fleet fares with the light winds of the North Channel/Irish Sea! Kuka 3 currently doing 0.6kn just off the NE coast.

Can just about see (through the haze) Kuka 3 to the east of Greystones now. Against the tide...doing 1.0kn.

Too far off Lambay Island and poor visibility means I didn't see them or won't see Green Dragon either!!

Looks like it's going to be a very long & slow evening/night for the bulk of the fleet off the North East coast... sailing into a big hole!!

Yeah, could be a long afternoon at least until the tide turns. Kuka 3 doing 0.3kn now. I can empathise! 😀

Is Kuka heading for Holyhead? 0.0 knots @ 60.94º. Could be stuck for the few hours until the ebb sets in c. 18.00.

Or has she retired, now heading N-W, going the wrong way.

The tide is pushing her back up north!!

    so close yet so far….

In an area with a very strong flood, best to head for the banks and drop anchor.

Kuka 3 on the horizon (from Greystones).

Is it just me, or the angle, but she looks to only have the main up? so maybe they did drop the hook and are waiting for a blow or the tide to change

Just had a look with the binoculars. Seems to have a white jib/genoa up (in addition to the black main).

Looks to be headed closer to the coast, heading SW, but tide may be pushing her back a little and maybe that's reason for odd looking angle on tracker?

Currently stuck off Larne in 3knots of breeze staring across at Scotland & Ailsa Craig for the last 2 hours drifting on the tide

Correction: Kuka 3 closer to me now and no foresail up, just main.

I do think Kuka 3 went to anchor for a bit. Maybe moving off again now? I can now also see Green Dragon, beyond the Kish, from my perspective.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,883 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Thats weird as I was expecting to see Green Dragon emerge from behind Lambay Island, but she looks to have tacked back out!!

When she makes a turn south I might see her as I still have visibility of the Kish.

...and there she is.. (just about!!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 799 ✭✭✭POBox19

Kuka3 definitely anchored on the bank. Sailing again now making a beeline for the finish, ETA within 2 hours as the wind fills and the tide ebbs.

Yip. Moving off out of my line of sight now. Breeze has also picked up which helps.
