Does anyone know if someone self employed who works from home can have a garden room built for a home office and use the company account to pay for it and can claim back the VAT etc?

yes, but it will become a company asset and you will need to depreciate over 8 years, also be careful if you intend to sell the property in the near future as you will lose your Principle Private Residents allowance and have to pay CGT

Thanks, no plans to sell the house. Would groundworks be covered as well (basically clearing some trees so the office can be built)?

i would say concrete yes, clearing trees no, but best check with your accountant before placing any orders

    Eusap,

under which category do you consider the expenditure on ground works for a non-industrial building would qualify for capital allowances?
