Dole 'summer bonus' .. are they for real?

I read on local Galway paper some TD calling for dole summer bonus, while some Labour TD called for as well a few weeks ago. I had to read it a second time to check it wasnt a joke.

There are currently 50k open jobs in Ireland, if not more. All medical, pharma, food and technology companies, warehouses, etc in Ireland cant find staff, unskilled or skilled. Every shop, cafe, bar, resturant I go into have notices looking for staff. My college age nephew & nieces are refusing extra hours to focus on their studies. Notices in local papersfor drivers, cleaners, care assistants, etc.

And opposition politicans are calling for dole summer bonuses. As if its hard enough already to get people off the dole and into work.

This is great news. More money for pints in the pub and backing horses in the bookies. Think i'll stick that 208 euro on a single horse. I currently have six kids for the extra benefits and will be thrown out of the house when 16 as no longer be of use to me. The local council kit out my council house so that's all good there.

Thank you tax payer, you work so I don't have to.

Do you have any details on this? With the exception of fraudsters, nobody is getting paid because they don't want to work, its because they can't or are on low income.

Have a look at social housing, people getting free houses with no intention of ever working.

There in every town and village in Ireland.

Also people on illness benefit as they got a note from there doctor even though there capable of working.

Ever see Turas Nua or whatever its called. There job is basically forcing people to go to work and getting people off long term employment who have no intention of working whatsoever.

As regards 'free houses' we are in a housing crisis and we need many more 'free houses' or to be more accurate, subsidised housing.

We've very low unemployment and to get money or any assistance you need show you need it. Anyone not working just because, would be defrauding the state, otherwise nobody is simply collecting money because they choose not to work.

Labour must be worried their traditional voters are going to leave them for the Soc Dems and the Greens.

They are a bit late to the party though SF have been pushing the welfare angle for quite some time now.

The Labour Party has said all social welfare payments should be increased by €15pw while a ‘summer bonus’ – along the lines of the Christmas bonus – should be paid out to help people deal with the cost of living crisis. There should be a once-off double payment of all social welfare benefits, like that at Christmas

So we agree. The only way to do it is by fraud. You don't know how many people are doing it. Yet here you are giving out about it. I agree its a problem but we've far bigger problems. Would we agree the majority are genuine cases? I won't begrudge someone who relies on state aid getting a little more if its deemed necessary due to inflation.

I think 'bonus' is a terrible term to use.

Or ended up unemployed after last recession and was comfortable and never went back when things picked up. You’re saying that situation does not exist in Ireland.

Those on PUP had to continue to pay their mortgages or rent - all of which are more than the ~€30 rent charged to those on Jobseekers social welfare in local authority housing. And where those jobseekers were in private housing there is payments made to landlords directly on behalf of the tennant.

Secondly, PUP at €350 per week doesn't come with a free medical card either.

Thirdly, there was no fuel allowance payments made to PUP recipients - let alone the additional balloon payments made last month

When talking about Jobseekers social welfare and what they get - there is alot more than the €208 per week into their hands to consider.

Minimum wage in this country barely clears €350 after taxes.
