    Hi

My car has been off the road for a couple of years due to working from home & covid.

I've changed address so looking to get the car Taxed so can bring with.

Problem is the motor tax is saying I owe them over a grand.

I've explained that I wasn't using the car but they don't care. I don't want money stolen from me.

I didn't realise that I needed to declare the car off the road.

Is there anything I can do ? e.g. Local Garda station verify for me.

    Thanks

"Sell" the car to a family member or friend, when the documentation arrives with them in their name change your mind and "buy" it back for the same price. The outstanding tax is reset at each ownership change.

By the law you need to know the law, and its not actualy new law. Garda dont/cant do that any longer i think, you could try. Unfortunately, but..

Above worked for me some years ago in same situation - transfer/change ownership to your other half/relative. Yeah, in some cases TRUST might be a THING.

Do then what you need to do - tax it or declare off road(for this you have up to 26d i think).

Can't see how it would be illegal to sell a car to yourself, especially with a new address. I'd chance it.

You had opportunity to declare your car off the road before your tax ran out just like every other car owner in the state. You chose not to avail of a legal mechanism to suspend your motor tax liability. You're not being robbed by being told you owe arrears of motor tax.

Having said that. If you sell your car and it changes Ower, the tax liability doesn't transfer to the new owner.

Just change the car in to someone else's name and the tax arrears will disappear

The tax office staff have been known to suggest this to people also.

This is the best solution and works perfectly, and its within the confines of the law as the sale and resale back to you are both genuine transactions, I've done it before with no issues and know people who have done the same with no issues.
