    What is it for you?

    Can be touching, amusing, witty...

For me this one must be one of the most touching ones I've ever heard, but the lyrics are just a part of it since the whole rendering is amazing:

Another one that comes to mind too when I think about good lyrics is this one:

    Really enjoy the storytelling.

One of the most profound existential questions, concisely poised in 4 simple words.

I said it's love, you said alright.... from a Roxy music song.

A whole relationship in one very short sentence.

Not exactly separable from the singing and music but lyrics to "El Scorcho" by Weezer because it's such a mixture of wittiness, personal idiosyncrasy and sort of a raw love song and then it turns into a kind of direct pleading which now that I think it about sort of reminds me of Motown.

I do love what they did with Tango du Roxanne from Moulin Rouge, quite emotional and excellently mixed. But it's a highly subjective question. I enjoy Tango du Roxanne but I'll also laugh along to "A Lapdance is So Much Better When the Stripper is Crying"... love them both for completely different reasons.

Recently, most of Alestorms stuff has excellent lyrics, but only if you're into that sort of thing (P.A.R.T.Y. is a banger!). Apocalypse 1992 by Gloryhammer has a special place in my heart, I call it the Bohemian Rhapsody of Epic Medieval 80s Future Space Power Metal! Wind Rose are unbelievable, and apparantly the lyrics are really good if you're into LOTR. I prefer their dwarven stuff. (I wonder if people recognise anything other than Bohemian Rhapsody in this paragraph...)

And during the pandemic I discovered the fittingly perfect New World In The Morning, simple yet effective lyrics.

The subtle shift from "yeah" to "no" makes this a particularly outstanding piece of lyrical craftsmanship.

    I don’t want to see a ghost

It’s the sight that I fear most

Rather have a piece of toast

    And watch the evening news.

Lads, you don't need to use [youtube] tags any more. Boards much maligned upgrade has improved this one feature at least.

Just paste in the YouTube URL, hit return (this is important, otherwise you're posting the link), and it will embed itself by magic.

    LIFE!! Oh life...

Listening to Sam Fender recently - Christ the kid can write!

    (17 going under)

She said the debt, the debt, the debt

So I thought about shifting gear

And how she wept and wept and wept

Luck came and died 'round here

    I see my mother

    The DWP see a number

She cries on the floor encumbered

    I'm seventeen going under

    Or from "Aye"

They don't act up for the camera

They just sit back and command them

And collect and deflect and abandon

They even wrote all the Ten Commandments

They watched Jesus get nailed at the cross

In real time and in their heads

They watched Boudica fall to the Romans

They watched Lennon as they shot him dead

They watched Jackie pick up Kennedy's head

They watched kids go to Epstein's bed

They watched Hollywood whitewash remake movies

Of napalm falling like water on rock

    st Swithins Day

    Biliy Bragg

    Thinking back now

I suppose you were just stating your views

    What was it all for

For the weather, or the Battle of Agincourt

And the times that we all hoped would last

Like a train they have gone by so fast

    And though we stood together

At the edge of the platform

We were not moved by them

    With my own hands

When I make love to your memory

    It's not the same

    I miss the thunder

    I miss the rain

And the fact that you don't understand

Casts a shadow over this land

But the sun still shines from behind it

    Thanks all the same

But I just can't bring myself to answer your letters

    It's not your fault

But your honesty touches me like a fire

The Polaroids that hold us together

    Will surely fade away

Like the love that we spoke of forever

    On St Swithin's Day

Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone, especially this verse.

Ah you never turned around to see the frowns

On the jugglers and the clowns when they all did tricks for you

You never understood that it ain't no good

You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you

You used to ride on a chrome horse with your diplomat

Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat

Ain't it hard when you discovered that

He really wasn't where it's at

After he took from you everything he could steal

I love 'Conversation Piece' by David Bowie. I thought (until now) that the line I liked was "And the light that shines above the grocer's store investigates my face so cruelly". But it's actually 'rudely'! That's a disappointment.

A love song to Ireland today by the Fontaines DC. Such painful truth.

I love you, I love you, I told you I do

It's all I've ever felt, I've never felt so well

And if you don't know it, I wrote you this tune

To be here loving you when I'm in the tomb

I've eddied the heart now, from Dublin to Paris

And if there was sunshine, it was never on me

So close, the rain, so pronounced is the pain

    Yeah

Well, I love you, imagine a world without you

It's only ever you, I only think of you

And if it's a blessing, I want it for you

If I must have a future, I want it with you

System in our hearts, you only had it before

You only open the window, never open up the door

And I love you, I love you, told you I do

Selling genocide and half-cut pride, I understand

I had to be there from the start, I had to be the **** man

It was a clamber of the life, I sucked the ring off every hand

Had 'em plying me with drink, even met with their demands

When the cherries lined up, I kept the spoilings for myself

'Til I had thirty ways of dying looking at me from the shelf

Cloud-parting smile I had, a real good child I was

But this island's run by sharks with children's bones stuck in their jaws

Now the morning's filled with cokeys tryna talk you through it all

Is their mammy Fine Gael and is their daddy Fianna Fáil?

And they say they love the land, but they don't feel it go to waste

Hold a mirror to the youth and they will only see their face

Makes flowers read like broadsheets, every young man wants to die

Say it to the man who profits, and the bastard walks by

And the bastard walks by, and the bastard walks by

Say it to him fifty times and still the bastard won't cry

    Would I lie?

I love you, I love you, I told you I do

It's all I've ever felt, I've never felt so well

And if you don't know it, I wrote you this tune

To be here loving you when I'm in the tomb

System in our hearts, you only had it before

Echo, echo, echo, the lights, they go

The lights, they go, the lights, they go

    Echo, echo

Selling genocide and half-cut pride, I understand

I had to be there from the start, I had to be the **** man

It was a clamber of the life, I sucked the ring off every hand

Had 'em plying me with drink, even met with their demands

And I loved you like a penny loves the pocket of a priest

And I'll love you 'til the grass around my gravestone is deceased

And I'm heading for the cokeys, I will tell 'em 'bout it all

About the gall of Fine Gael and the fail of Fianna Fáil

And now the flowers read like broadsheets, every young man wants to die

Say it to the man who profits, and the bastard walks by

And the bastard walks by, and the bastard walks by

Say it to him fifty times and still the bastard won't cry

    Would I lie?

One line in pop classic Sit down by James always stands out to me ...

Now I've swung back down again it's worse than it was before,if I hadn't seen such riches I could live with being poor.

Yes!! One of my favourites too.

Also live The Stunning's line from Brewing up a storm:

I don't need a platter, I'll take it straight from the shelf.

Give it to me raw, I'll take it home and cook it myself.

Bob seeger..... a song called " against the wind"...... brilliant lyrics but one line always sticks out for me....

    " wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then"

"Oh, find me, find me, nothing more

We are on a sullen misty moor

We may be dead and we may be gone

But we will be, we will be, we will be, right by your side

    Until the day you die

    This is no easy ride"

Any song written by Paul Noonan (Bell x1) ... amazing writer..... Very subtle, very simple, very good....

"Im not over you, can i get back under"

"He said 'i wanna shine in the eye of Orion, But I drove my soul through the Black Hole'

She said 'That's a wonderful way to wake me, But you weren't so nice last night

You're such an asshole when you're drunk , And he said 'At least I'm okay in the mornings'

"And he was bare, stripped of his skin, Like the ribs of a broken umbrella Sticking out of a bin"

    "Bright lights and Thunder .................... " #NoPopcorn

'Time can never mend, the careless whispers of a good friend....' So much heartache in those lyrics.
