But this quote that got me 'For example, we are reviewing speed limits and examining the possibility of a greater roll-out of 30km/h speed zones'

How about just enforcing the existing laws & punish just those that do speed, without threatening to punishing every driver even those within the existing law instead! (Blood boils with this crap)

It says that in the survey 3/4 of drivers were breaking the 50kmph limit.

If that could be extrapolated to the general population of drivers there would not be enough Gardai to catch them all.

They are only considering a 30kmph limit where pedestrians and cyclists are particularly vulnerable.

    Makes sense to me.

They want to put average speed cameras on all the major routes. I never see the Gards on the M7 and people constantly take the piss. The only thing that will make people change their habits is the stick, not asking them nicely.

30km/h zones on estates are one thing (although nobody seems to obey them even there) but on through routes are a joke. If we want to make cyclists and pedestrians safer, we need to provide infrastructure for them (cycle lanes which aren't just a painted line next to the gutter, wide enough footpaths, enough pedestrian crossings) not just slap on a low limit and then say "job done". But that's the cheap and easy option.

If most people are speeding on certain 50km/h roads, that's probably because they're main roads which should be 60km/h.

Believe it or not, most traffic goes at a safe speed for the road concerned regardless of what the speed limit signs say, those who go well above the average cause danger but, funnily enough, so do those who go well below. I've seen enough ridiculous limits get eventually revised upwards in my time to call the whole system into question... and of course just because the limit is X does not mean it's actually safe to go at that speed in bad weather, etc.

Garda enthusiasm to enforce a speed limit in a particular place appears to be directly proportional to how ridiculously low that speed limit is.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

It's a motorway, it's made for going fast. There's a lot more dangerous driving going on on other roads but less easy to catch.

You're having a laugh you never seen them on the M7, I drive it every day and see them and speed vans numerous times throughout the day on it from Kill right down to Rathdowney, nonsense its the most policed motorway in the country imo.

Are they there everyday? - No. Are they always in the same place? - Yes. This is hardly a deterrent. The Gards are hardly ever there at Kill.

I'm talking about the people who consistently break the speed limit on the M7 and then the N7. The dangerous driving is why there need to be more Gards out on the roads, more often.

Cyclists will be overtaken cars in 30kph zones

Some dope yesterday managed to get pulled in the average speed camera area on the M7 down headed for Birdhill.

Shot past me in his X5, I was sat at 120 on Gps.

I mean he was going to get done by the average cameras anyway, wasn't he? Dope

Well if this were a democracy, the intent and feeling of the populace would be very clear. An absolute landslide in favour.

What are you on about? I drive the N/M 7 every weekday and often see either a Garda car or a Gatso van on both sides. Remember by right gatsos aren’t allowed park on a motorway. Heading up to Dublin I have seen them parked adjacent to the slip road into the Circle K at Kill also just beyond the same service station. Also seen them many times around J2.

Coming down I have often seen them parked just past the bend after the flyover at Newlands X, they also often park on the roadside at The Potteen Still again at that gate into a field on the long drop from J5 to J6. Again between J8 & J9 .

I drive a van so am a higher than most cars but lower than artics. The BIGGEST problem for me isn’t speedsters but people with NO concern for others as they MUST do their texting on their cellphone, and nearly always in the outside lane with the phone down beside their right leg.

While on a rant, when will people EVER learn to use their f***ing indicators on a roundabout AND learn that there IS AN INSIDE Lane. This plonked in the middle or outside Lane needs fining and Penalty points awarded.

The Gards and speed vans mustn't work the same hours as me, because I'm on that road nearly 5 days a week and rarely see them. I agree with you about poor driving habits, but how will they be changed?

In my experience that driving at 50kmph in 50kmph (which I do always) leads to drivers behind getting annoyed and diving extremely close to me and at times flashing their lights at me.I know what's going behind me but I am obeying the rules. But the people driving today are mostly in a hurry and want to get where they are going fast. Some of the 50kmph zones do seem strange but rules are rules. Many of todays are much more agressive and don't worry about getting fines or penalty points. How this attitude can be changed,I have no idea.

But that’s the point. If they are at certain positions every day, everyone will know and just slow down at that specific point, which defeats the purpose IMHO. Leaving Dublin every evening I always stick to the speed limit coming off the flyover as I have often seen the gatso parked just around that bend ( before the entrance to the Roadstone Quarry ), and anyone belting it there will be caught. Sneaky maybe, but certainly effective.

there used to be always a gatso parked in a field entrance just after Toughers roundabout driving up from Newbridge. But it was there so often all us regulars knew and drove accordingly. He probably got nothing there as I haven’t seen it there for a long time now.
