Bleh. It has always been a sentiment-driven festival

The Eurovision Committee explaining the outcome of the contest to an enraged Piers

And Kalush Orchestra get their spake in

He’s not wrong - but I’m more interested in knowing how Piers Morgan is ‘frumpy’, is he wearing a frilly dress?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

Rigged how? People voted more for Ukraine because of current circumstances, thats all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Yes he was the lead in the popular film Mrs doubtfire....

It's kind of sad he will pretty much do or say anything to get a bit of attention. That new channel in which he is the figurehead is dying on its arse, his ratings are in the toilet and some of his colleagues have shows that are registering as having no viewers...lol

So Piers has an issue with a popularity contest which was decided by popular vote

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,106 ✭✭✭✭elperello

    Grumpy maybe?

Whatever he is saying he is always well turned out, a snappy dresser you might say.

What a pathetic waste of a man.

an irrelevance trying to become relevant throws his toys out of the pram, again.

that knuckle dragger hasn't been right on anything, ever tbh.

he can't even scrape together an audience for his new **** show dispite the channel being owned by a big media empire all though there isn't much of a market for full on far right television in the UK dispite their little bolstering over the past few years. they got into power via a minority but the majority aren't interested in their crap.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

the sympathy vote was stupid while we all sit comfortably at home while Ukraine is getting bombed to bits

That only means that there's an overwhelming wave of public sympathy behind Ukraine in Europe at the moment, and that sense of support meant more than considerations on the quality of song writing. It doesn't mean the contest is rigged. Rigged is when there's a central force controlling the outcome of the result. Something happening by overwhelming public support is the very opposite of rigged. The sense of support found a way to express itself in a fairly easy, accessible and innocent way - but an effective way too.

You can't legislate for the reasons that people vote for something. We all know it's supposed to be a song contest - the prize goes to the song writer, not the performer (unless they're the same). But of course even on a good year, it's the performance that people are judging. But people like Morgan don't jump up and say "What a farce! That winning song only won because of the spectacular performance of the singer! An outrage!".

Was it though? The winner gets the right to host next year's contest. It shines a spotlight on the war over a longer term than many people have been talking about it. What's going to happen next year? Will the war still be going on? Will the country be in a fit state to host it?

We can see from the very angry reaction from Russia and the positive and defiant reaction from Ukraine that it was an action that had some material effect. It's not just a case of either do absolutely nothing or have NATO directly fight Russia - there's plenty can be done (and is being done) between those two extremes, even things as small and seemingly frivolous as this. It all adds up.

He is right tbf. They could have got up and just sang the alphabet and they'd have won.

I was not aware Sentiment or Sympathy formed part of the voting process for the Eurovision Song contest albeit in fairness Talent doesn't either by all accounts. Let's be Frank here, the Song was utter shyte, Piers is a vile , odious, ghastly individual, Rigged perhaps the wrong word to describe the result, more a wink , nod , tea & Sympathy vote , so to speak. In essence just like the event itself, utter nonsense.

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

That's not rigged, it was voted on... Rigged implies something corrupt occurred.

Ah he's half right..... Wibbs and Beasty could have been sent up there to represent Ukraine with a yodelling song and still have won. All of a Europe is so pissed off with Russia, this was one way to show solidarity with Ukraine. And piss off the Russian government. Suppose its not exactly fair on the other contestants, but just the way Europe feels at the moment.

And fair fcuks to Ukraine. They won it, keeping their country in the limelight to keep the support the need to win this war and think those lads and now back home defending the country.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

Piers Morgan is far right? 😅 You're some man EOTR.

“The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than anyone else. You know it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn't it? A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.”- ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

I mean the public vote sure, but juries voted that Ukraine song high and those are meant to actually be about the performance and singing ability.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,504 ✭✭✭Deeec

In fairness he is right. It was a sympathy and solidarity vote which is fair enough. The UK should have won though.

What use is winning the Eurovision to the people of the Ukraine - none whatsoever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,733 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Rigged isn't really the word I'd use. He's right in that the Ukraine vote wasn't based on musical quality (as much as Eurovision ever is tbh).

But with that said, what a weird rant and weird hill to die on. Nobody else gives a damn. I'm not sure who the audience is that he thinks this will play well with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,420 ✭✭✭✭rob316

I love the way he calls it crap and he doesn't care about it before, when the UK are done out of it then (lets be honest they were) its a rig and outrage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭pnott

I don't think the contest was rigged to the extent that it changed the outcome. Ukraine came first in the public vote in 28 out of 39 countries. Serbia in comparison came first in the public vote in just 5 countries. Even if some votes were altered to give Ukraine the win with that level of public support it was never in doubt that Ukraine would win. No rigging required on behalf of the Italian broadcaster or the EBU itself.

I am more concerned about what went on with the jury votes. In the final during the announcement of the jury results, Romania, Azerbaijan and Georgia were unable to connect to the venue to give their votes so the EBU supervisor stepped in to announce their votes. This was explained as technical issues. Romanian, Azerbaijan and Georgian broadcasters all say they experienced no technical problems. The EBU seemingly rejected their jury results and replaced them with made up results. The Romanian jury claims they awarded 12 points to Moldova but the EBU changed that to Ukraine. Azerbaijan and Georgia claim they awarded their 12 points to Ukraine but they were both changed to give 12 points to the UK. The change in the jury votes didn't affect the overall result but the fact that the EBU seemingly changed the results without explanation is very interesting. In the 2nd semi final (our semi final) the Danish broadcaster is alleging that 6 countries agreed to exchange votes and similarly their jury votes were rejected and replaced with similar results based on historic voting patterns.

He's right in the sense that the result was predetermined because of the war, that would constitute rigged in my book.

If they wanted a fair contest they could have given Ukraine a special award and excluded them from the main competition. That was never going to happen of course.

These are unique times and a show of solidarity towards Ukraine is worth something even if from a purely song quality perspective they didn't deserve to win. There's probably a fair few acts left scratching their heads wondering what was the point of it all.

I mean I guess you could call it rigged if someone forced the UK to submit that relatively poor entry. I'd have more sympathy for the UK stans on this if what they put forward was actually competitive music. Frankly, Ukraines entry was stronger in every aspect except gorgeous blonde locks.

Yes Ukraine winning was so we all feel good about ourselves!

it wasn't the best song or performance, Sweden, UK or Spain would have been my choice.

But the public vote is not on merit, recall naming that antarctic boat, BoatyMacBoatface?

The supposed professional's Juries voted for the UK! maybe they should have won! I think Ireland tele-voted for Ukraine and Poland and Lithuania with more to do with our polish and baltic friends voting for the homeland!
