Legend of Dragoon is included so it's obviously worth a fortune.

Seriously though, sad to see a bundle of nice games like that in a flip case. Original cases long binned I'd imagine.

If the games were boxed it would be ok. But to me disk games unboxed have zero value.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,352 ✭✭✭KeRbDoG

Person is a dreamer, other advert they have is 300e for a PS4 with 5 games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,420 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

The PS4 doesn't sound terrible, €200 for the console from CeX (albeit pricey as the original and slim are the same price) the controllers are €65-90 from them and have always been expensive new. Add up a few cheap games and it's a fairly normal price. Not a great deal though, I'd rather buy it new. Those games are usually €15-20 new from Smyths/Amazon at this stage so the total lot wouldn't break the bank. Pretty sure original PS4s are like €150 secondhand?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,012 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

Was wondering maybe if they were basing them on CEX’s CIB prices give they’ve started selling PS1 stuff in Ireland.

So apparently the wiiU can become bricked if it's left turned off and unused for long periods of time. I'm quite worried now as mine has been left in my parents attic for quite some time now and there's a few wiiu games I still want to beat.

No way? Is there an internal battery that holds encryption keys I wonder? Must look that up, I haven't switched my WiiU on in a few years at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,352 ✭✭✭KeRbDoG

I have one such WiiU at home (and a working one) and I've just stumbled upon this guide which suggests it can be unbricked. Might have a go tonight

Eh... something to do with the NAND? Which I know is very bad.

This has been your weekly update from a retrogaming luddite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,054 ✭✭✭Colonel Panic

Just checked mine and it works, including launching some Wii games from the eShop, after maybe 5 years of being all boxed up.

Does anyone have a rough idea of the timeline on this?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,795 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

No one really knows, only getting reported now and people are saying you should back up your NAND to prevent it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 769 ✭✭✭barryribs

That's annoying, I think mine is from 2013 but been off since about 2018. I have to get it out of storage to use my starfox guard code before the eshop closes anyway, so every cloud and all that

Anyone else find it hard to believe the WiiU came out over ten years ago?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,795 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Metal Gear Solid Revengeance is 10 years old, retronauts just covered it.

I think games have moved on so little in the last 10 years that it doesn't feel as long. It used to be that each generation was a monumental shift in hardware and scope. Now I couldn't tell a PS4 or PS5 game apart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 769 ✭✭✭barryribs

100% There was a nintendo direct sometime last year and it they had advanced wars remastered, no mans sky, a port of the wii version of the force unleashed and portal. It could have been from 2013 and you wouldn't know the difference

I see GTA V is also ten years old this year. That's been on what, three different generations of consoles now?

If you were playing a game from three generations previous, ten years ago, that would be akin to playing a SNES game on your Xbox 360.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,420 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

As much shít as people like to give Rockstar, the fact that it's still in the top 5 sales on both PS4 and PS5 every single month is insane for a game that old. Whatever about the online shark cards and being ported several times it's seriously impressive.

My brain just doesn't comprehend how long ago the 360/PS3 era was. How was I playing CoD4 or Condemned sixteen years ago? I feel weird posting 360 stuff in the new gets thread because it doesn't feel retro...

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,795 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

There's 10 years between LOZ: a link to the past and Metal Gear Solid 2.

I played Revengeance last night and still think it could pass as a modern game.

Another good comparison is the PS3 version of the Last of Us and the recent PS5 release. 10 years between them and I was looking at digital foundry video and them saying it's a monumental shift in graphics and all I could think of was how gorgeous the PS3 version still looks and how in some places it looked better artistically.

Rather amazingly I've managed to go ten years without ever actually playing a ps4. Still view my Xbox One as a 'new' console!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,898 ✭✭✭Inviere

Just retrieved my launch model one there, will give it a test next week. It's stock, so I'll probably be forced to install CFW on it now to make a NAND bakup...IF it even works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,898 ✭✭✭Inviere

Bad news for anyone thinking theirs might be ok. My launch model appears to boot fine, upgraded it to the latest firmware etc, all perfect. Went to dump the nand, and boom, error 160-0103 when the payload attempts to dump the nand contents. It must be corrupted at a point that isn't crucial (yet), and will likely continue to spread. So if you're testing yours and it boots up, you aren't out of the woods I'm afraid.

Ah no, sorry to hear that! My WiiU is stored away in a spot I won't be able to get to for a good while yet. (potentially years) so I don't think there's much hope for it so.

We're quite lucky really when you think about it that more consoles havent suffered like this with chip failures/memory corruption and that it seems to really mostly be just bad caps that caused most issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,898 ✭✭✭Inviere

Yeah it's a shame, such little use on it too. It'll look nice on a shelf I suppose! I mean it still works, but there's obviously the beginnings of the issue starting if I can't seem to dump the nand. Thankfully there's really very little reason to bother with the Wii U these days I suppose.

Do have to wonder if there'll be a market in the future of 'rare working WiiU!' consoles. Sure how else will retro gamers of tomorrow play Star Fox Zero?? 😁

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,795 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I think you mean Devil's Third

I wish they made more use out of the touch pad. The nintendoland games that use it are so much fun.

is there a reason they’re not porting Xenoblade X across to the Switch?

Luigi's Ghost Mansion (aka Pac Man Vs with a reskin) is stupid amounts of fun with a few people in the room. I remember playing that at one of Ciderman's beers and it's what sold me on picking up a WiiU.

I wonder if this will spawn someone to have a look at cracking the bespoke wifi tech that Nintendo used for the Gamepad to Wii U communication. It'd be amazing to be able to pair the GamePad with Cemu, and use it as you would on a real Wii U.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,795 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Monolith have said it would be way too much work. The engine for Xenoblade X was created specifically for the WiiU architecture and takes full advantage of it so it would be a major engine rework and monolith just don't have the manpower.

Absolutely adored the game, the main story was naff but the world was just a blast to explore and it had a great combat system. The only issue is you get mechs way too late in the game and I was burned out before I finished the post game mega bosses.

Sold my wiiu about 2 years after it came out.

I actually won it in a text competition and it came with zombiU. Played that and I think a mario game and then sold it on.

Never felt like I missed out on much tbh

I picked up a Wii u free at a Christmas market and still in the boot of the car.

    some day

Really have no idea of the actual worth of this lot. But looking for €23'000 for a collection, no description or list of games, about 200 blurry photos and then throwing this in at the end

"As I am a very busy person I’d really appreciate no time wasters looking to give me 5 quid for an uncommon Zelda game, in fact I won’t even answer the question, possibly a straight block situation.

Thanks for reading, and if you are interested and serious and have big boys and girl’s money 💰, we can talk."

That reeks of "the other half is forcing me to sell but I'm gonna deliberately price myself out of the market."

Would be willing to bet those Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire are fakes just from the label, not to mention the red flag of them being the only NTSC games in a PAL GBA collection. Even if they are gen, who doesn't post picture of their Pokemon GBA boards in 2023. It's absolute basic practice given the state of the GBA/DS Pokemon market and the absolute hell that is trying to navigate fakes, and that's without even getting into the price they're up for.

Edit: And the hits keep coming, can't even be arsed to give the collection a dust before slapping them up for 23k.

His responses make him come across as a complete pain in the hoop too

Edit: And I would also put the house on those pokemon games being fake

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 921 ✭✭✭dav09

Yeah it's very strange, I'm not sure who would be in the market for buying a full 20k collection anyway, if at a push there's 2000 games there that averages out to probably 20 eur per game (since there's consoles there too) which seems steep for a job lot.

I remember recently looking up some expensive GBA carts and I remembered I had a few from when I was a kid, turned out they were fake! I thought I was in the money 😥

Has anyone in the history of adverts ever put up a big lot like that and actually sold it as one unit? Can't say I've ever seen it happen...

The analogue duo is up for preorder tomorrow.

I want one but I went to Ikea this month....

Seems like a nice machine, can't say it appeals to me though. Mister all the way, though if you're set on using physical media this is nice.

I'm half tempted to put down a pre order and sell my turbo duo. I'd have to check if it still works. I got it in Japan and the caps were replaced by super potato. It's boxed and on great nick. I just can't check if it's working as it's being lorded over by sauron. Could end up actually saving money and heartache as I hear the turboduos are a pain to look after.

It does look very lovely but I am just not sold on the authenticity of FGPA consoles. Not yet anyway.

For me you either have the full original experience of original hardware and game or full digital experience via FGPA & digital games.

This 'hybrid car' type scenario where you've a digitally emulated FGPA console with real games seems a little bit pointless.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,795 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

According to Analogue the FPGA emulation isn't emulation 😁

Haha! According to Analogue they're also solving world hunger and ending all wars. I've never seen such self aggrandising waffle!

Their use of the phrase 'no emulation' is incredibly disingenuous. FPGA is 100% emulation. It emulates systems at hardware level. That's LITERALLY the purpose of it 😁

Of course they know that too, they just want to make their FPGA chip in a console shaped box sound special.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,898 ✭✭✭Inviere

I'd agree there (though I'd lean on fpga solutions being up there with original hardware if the core author does it properly.) Using real carts etc with an fpga based console is something I'm not sold on. Go with one or the other, or hell, both!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,898 ✭✭✭Inviere

That whole stick of theirs is so obnoxious. NOT EMULATION....except it is, in hardware form.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,054 ✭✭✭Colonel Panic

Everything about Analogue's marketing and advertising make me cringe so hard. And their "pay now, wait ? months" business model annoys the hell out of me.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,795 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I don't really mind the pay now wait months thing. They have been proven to deliver and for a small company it's an easy way to gauge production so you don't end up with cashflow issues. It's the unfortunate consequence of surviving in their business.

I usually just pay and when they show up it's a nice surprise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,054 ✭✭✭Colonel Panic

How much I mind depends on the wait time. I was happy enough with it when the original batch of SuperNTs went up for preorder as it was only a few months. Supply chain issues just stretched it out too much for me and made me think "How is this business model a good thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,975 ✭✭✭✭o1s1n

I've found a few times with those long wait time items, I've been really excited on the pre order date but then not really cared nearly as much when the item finally arrives as it's just been so long.

I remember considering buying the Analogue pocket a while back but the wait time was so long I might have died of old age by the time it arrived on my door step.
