Tax Relief on Prescription Drugs - proof required

What exactly is expected as proof to claim tax relief on prescription medication - in case of audit?

The last time I claimed was for 2018 and the pharmacy provided a summary print out of all prescriptions purchased over the previous year. However, they have told me they don't do this anymore.

Is it a case of just keeping receipts each month? But these are just Visa receipts with no detail and contain a mixture of prescription and non-prescription (not eligible for tax relief) purchases. This doesn't seem adequate to me.

What do other people get as proof please?

I pay approx €800 a year for prescription medication so I don't want to let it go unclaimed. Thank you.

I still get the printed duplicate receipt when I get prescription meds, are you not getting that from the pharmacy?

Is this the duplicate form with Prescription Claim Form printed on top? I was told these are only for use for claiming under the Drug Payment Scheme when you pay over €80 (recently reduced from €100) per month. So are these forms adequate proof for claiming tax relief?

Some pharmacies do still provide the MED1 printout which would show prescription items however it seems yours does not. The blue and white prescription detail sheet which comes with the medication would be sufficient proof. A till receipt which specifically identifies prescription items separate to OTC items would also suffice. A visa slip on it's own with no detailed receipt would not do as there is no breakdown of the items.

That is the receipt basically everyone else uses if they don't get an annual printout (which many pharmacies never did, and I'd never use just the one - the one under my GP often closes before it and so on)

OK, thanks. I'll use the duplicate form if that's adequate. Thank you!

They should give you an annual printout but if they won’t, spending 800 a year with them…. Tell them you’re moving pharmacies to one that will give you a print out. Many do and will, but these are mainly the smaller independent types. A joke they won’t give you a print out they have your life on a computer in their shop, from a medical point of view.

If they still don't supply the printout you could request one under the Data Protection Acts. See the Data Commissioners website for a sample request letter.
