Advice for new car

I am looking at buying a new car. At present have a Volkswagen Passat 1.9L Diesel (2006). Been really reliable the 5 years I have had it but time for a change.

I would do in the region of 25,000km a year and budget in the region of €15k but would potentially stretch to €20,000 if that that extra €5k is really worth it for. Mostly National primary road driving and not very much city driving. Would do 2 or 3 drives a week that would be 180km of a round trip. Have been looking at a few cars and would just like advice from the people in the know if I am on the right track or not.

The cars I have been looking at are (1) Passat (2) Mazda 2.2 (3) Mondeo (4) Honda Accord (5) Peugeot 308 (6) Skoda Superb

I searched the Mazda 2.2 on here and I think from the number of posts I read it is an absolute avoid if it has a diesel engine, but the petrol engine is ok. I remember looking at these forums before purchasing my current car and all advise when somebody was saying they would be doing a similar mileage to me was to get a diesel. Is that still the view of people who know their cars even though now the prices have flipped?

Just want to avoid any crocks so would appreciate if you could point the way to a reliable car, with a bit of pep and fairly good mpg. And if I want good mpg am I as well off just sticking to a diesel.

I know I only have saloons listed above but not necessarily set on getting one, so any hatchbacks that may interest I would be interested in hearing them.

Would really appreciate the views of people!
