Did they steal the vehicle with the key?

Was it an Irish/UK vehicle from new or Japanese import?

Do you know if it was driven away or towed away by another vehicle?

Had you recently purchased the vehicle and possibility of another key being out there?

Had you recently had the vehicle being worked on by someone who could have made attempts to recode keys on it?

Thanks for reply. Came home from night duty and parked as normal. Locked her up and keys were in house. Don't know how it was stolen......

I thought if it didn’t show up within X days they assume it’s not coming back?

    Maybe commercial policy is different.

I have fully comprehensive and was told I wasn't entitled to a courtesy car for first 7 days as my jeep might show up. I had to borrow and hire a car ...... Submitted all paperwork, spare keys, tax book,photos.... It's a joke paying out do much every year and never made a claim in 30 years of driving. Means nothing.....

If you had your insurance paid up to date, and the vehicle was reported stolen to the authorities in the correct manner I would have expected this to have been resolved by now.

Have they even given you a valuation, or what's the dialogue like between you and them?

Everything was paid up to date. There just doing everything possible not to settle the claim....... It's my first experience with a theft but from research it seems that it's not uncommon that insurance companies make it very difficult...

Despite the cost, I'd say it's time to get your solicitor involved.

Ask them how long do they wait before they assume it won't be found? If it's found after that they it's the insurers property.

Have you agreed in a value? Sometimes you need to be pushy with insurers, it's your problem not theirs. They will try offer you a low sum at first and you need to haggle in the price. Some insurers are worse than others but it's a game of cowboys.

What the hell, 6 months ago it was stolen? Who's your insurance company and will avoid.

Would have expected everything to be resolved and paid up in less than 1 month but that's not speaking from experience but rather what I'd expect after paying a company for cover. How do they expect anyone to manage without a car/jeep for so long.

Insurance is crippling in this country and it's literally a last resort to lodge a claim due to further fears of being screwed with increased premiums and loss of any sort of bonus. Thankfully I've never had to lodge a claim but you really only get to know how good or bad your insurance company is once a claim is lodged.

There not interested in the customer despite what they advertise ok on TV. I don't understand why a company that your paying for a service treat people this way. I've heard many stories since. I was not entitled to a car for first week because mine might show up. Never heard do much nonesense....

Has anyone else out there had similar experiences ?

Going back about 10 years ago I had a relative and their car was stolen on a private car policy, similar to what you did sent the keys including spares, logbook etc back to them. From memory there was a wait period of 30 days from the time it was stolen until the insurance company paid out, this was in their terms and conditions in the event that car was recovered within this window. If the car was recovered after this point it would be the property of the insurer but you would have the opportunity to buy it back at some discounted rate should you wish. Their car was never recovered or seen again but they got the payout after the 30 days.

Your claim seems to have fallen through the cracks somewhere, get back to them and look for a proper update within a week or so, no way should you be waiting this long especially seeing as you have provided already all they have required.

Doesn't surprise me one bit and I've known similar BS from insurance companies with friends and relatives, not just with cars either*. Though not dragging out for six months like this. As ZG above said it's a game of cowboys in this country, helped by some cowboys in the legal profession and successive governments who've done little to eff all about it.

As for the theft. Cars used to be stupidly easy to steal pre the 90's and then immobolisers were fitted as standard to more and more cars and it got much harder for the thieves and car theft went right down. Then in the last ten years keyless opening and all that has made cars stupidly easy to steal again. If anything easier than pre 90's cars. There's a couple of ways they do it. One is a range extender device where they stand outside your house pick up the signal from your key, boost it and make the car think the key is beside the car and it'll unlock and start and off they go. Another way is to pick the car door lock then access the cars OBD port, plug in a reader which clones a blank key they bring with them, start the car and off they go.

After that it's either broken for spares and whats left sold off for scrap(which is fetching very good money at the moment), or driven into a shipping container with others and off to some corrupt 3rd world craphole to be sold off. A few months ago I watched a news report for Canada into car thefts there and a local chap in Nigeria exposing this kinda thing found dodgy dealers selling cars stolen from Canada still with thier Canadian number plates attached.

*one guy I know had some equipement stolen from his business premises. Same insurance company for decades, no claims, but with costs going up year on year etc. They paid up after some tooing and froing and when the next year's insurance quote came in the premium had risen by the amount they'd paid out, damn near to the penny.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

A solicitors letter to the Insurance company might help, my sister used this and suddenly it was sorted out.

Thanks...I was trying to avoid that route to jeep costs down but it seems I have no choice. Thanks for all the replies....

Just ring them again and again, every day, about 15 mins earlier every time. just let them know you arent going away.

About 20 years ago i had a relativly low value car stolen. Insurance company stalled until i turned up at their office one day.

Administrator there told me 70% of claims under €£600 are never paid out ! Then made me wait for 20 mins for the cheque.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 doh1970

And things haven't changed in 20 years !

Insurance is adversarial always was, always will be. Happy to take your money for years, but when you need to claim they turn into a nightmare. After 6 months, call in your solicitor, they’re not going to play nice.

So, an O9 landcruiser- could I ask, did you have any callers at the door over previous few weeks that you can remember? Anything strange at all? I ask because I had a strange experience over the last week- a caller to the door early evening- "looking for someone"- described them, where they worked, the colour of their skin, marital status - but didn't give a name (and sorry, I was distracted at the time so didn't ask)- it was only after I closed the door, I went, that was SOOOO strange.

She was female and African origin- I don't to this day for sure, know if this was a genuine query or not but I suspect not- if your gut says somethings up, then, somethings up.

I felt she was casing the joint so my is radar on over coming weeks as I have an "older car" outside but may be in high demand somewhere abroad.

Would feel like a fool reporting above to guards but if anyone has experienced similar, so say now.

PS- I was probably uber polite BECAUSE of the colour of her skin and wanting to help as best I could and showing that I was totally cooperative - I only reflected on it after and said, that was just so suspect.

Just to clarify- my main query here is- is there a particular gang or group in Ireland targeting older cars that may have a value in African countries and are all set up to export? Scams frauds and cons have a pattern so just wondering does the above resonate with anyone. New scams etc emerge all the time- this caller to my door was just highly suspect and yes, I should have asked "different" questions, and i didn't- but if it's a fraud or scoping exercise, now you know- and yes, colour of skin doesn't matter per se, but it may be a particular scam from a particular ethnic community, with a particular interest- or maybe this is a general scam, but inacted by a particular ethnic group because they're focused on a particular foreign market- or not.

Thankyou for all the comments. Is it normal for an insurance company not to provide a courtesy car for first 7 days ? They said my jeep might be found first... what is one to supposed to do when car is robbed in first week ???

OP hasn't told us what the issue is with the insurance company. They must have a problem with the cover, the circumstances or the paperwork. Insurers generally declare a vehicle permanently lost after 14 days and proceed to try and agree a value with the policyholder straight away

If everything is in order, the theory that insurers will try and avoid their obligations is nonsense

get The ombudsman involved. Things will happen quicker then. Insurance is covered under the financial services ombudsman

As the saying goes, two sides to every story. Who was the insurer and what is there reason for the delay?

I had a car stolen off the drive I think it was done and dusted within 5 weeks. Courtesy car provided for 7day as per t&cs and then agreement made for extend use till claim resolved.

OP regarding the courtesy car check the T&Cs of your policy. I don't think I've ever heard of a claim taking so long to resolve particularly a stolen car claim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,053 ✭✭✭Eggs For Dinner

You cannot refer any issue to the Ombudsman unless you have first gone through the insurers official complaints procedure and received confirmation from them that a resolution cannot be agreed on

I think the OP needs to tell us the full story

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭Repo101

This is complete nonsense. I managed a rental fleet of over 3,500 cars for 4 years and while some insurance companies were okay to deal with, the majority were poorly managed with constant delays due to lack of staff, poor administration and poorly trained staff.

You may have that opinion with regard to a general accident claims, but theft claims are straight forward. There is no way this claim has remained outstanding for so long without the insurer having communicated an issue to the insured which needs addressing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 doh1970

Look up reviews from customers on insurance companies and you will find that some, not all do avoid there obligations but they are more than helpful to you when giving out quotes for insurance and taking payments.....Every query asked I have answered. Photos, paperwork, documents all provided. In fact all my replies to their queries were not only emailed but also sent by registered post..no hidden story...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 842 ✭✭✭Hego Damask

This makes me so angry, insurance companies are absolute scum, will do everything to avoid paying out, yet will take the premiums double quick..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,053 ✭✭✭Eggs For Dinner

So what have they said to you about what's taking so long and why do you appear to tolerate it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,053 ✭✭✭Eggs For Dinner

Insurers cannot avoid paying out if cover is in order

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 doh1970

Honestly I only joined this forum to see if anyone had similar experiences. Every week I'm emailing and phoning for updates but they don't respond for weeks. And when they do they ask them same questions they asked me weeks ago and I always give the same reply.....

What questions are they asking you and what is the issue they have told you is delaying matters?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭toyotatommy

Maybe they are looking for his jeep instead of a landcruiser.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 doh1970

They keep asking me to explain where is the original fob. So I purchased the jeep, had 2 spare keys. One with fob. One without fob. Casing eventually breaks,as they do and I replaced the casing and got a new key cut. Put the original fob into new casing. There was issue with that which I couldn't understand. I even gave them the original key with broken casing. That entire process alone has been going on 2 months. I asked for a typed copy of the investigators report which I received and a copy of the handwritten report which I signed,I did not receive that as yet....in the typed report I have seen some faults already that's why I'm waiting on original statement to compare....this has been going on for past 4 weeks.....
