Well it's that time of year again. I checked my records for 2020 and 2021. Both years by this date I'd recorded both swallows and the Cuckoo here in Leitrim.

    Nothing yet.

I heard my first swallows on the 28th of March. No cuckoos whatsoever, I'm afraid.

First cuckoo for me yesterday afternoon (April 26th) on the bogs northeast of Kinnegad, a spot that has turned up my first cuckoo-of-the-year more than once!

First cuckoo and swallow yesterday. Co. Leitrim.

    Later than average.

Anyone else notice a big increase in Whitethroats this year?? Seem to be everywhere in any suitable habitat anywhere I've been in the country this past month on 2 mini breaks. Good few Swifts about too but alot less Swallows

Around these parts, South Leitrim, the place is full of swallows. The most we've seen in a number of years.

Swallows nesting in my shed again this year, thats every year over the past 7 I've lived here. Only one pair this year. Hearing lots of bird sounds from the lake in the nearby field but havent a clue what I'm hearing, we get a lot of birds from Lough Ree spending the nights there and luckily there is a decent waterways guy locally who takes the odd pitcture to post on his fb.

    Anyone watching Springwatch on bbc2??

They featured the amazing Nightjar yesterday, do we ever get it in Ireland?😶

I've been watching, it's such a beautiful bird, incredible plumage and eyes.

I heard one calling just after midnight one night a good few weeks ago... was it late April/early May? Rural part of north Offaly. Not unlike the sound a grasshopper makes, but not the same either!

Very random in their appearance - Forth Mtn in Wexford was the only recent regular location. Their nocturnal habits make them very hard to detect.

Lot's of swallows passing through my area in Swords the past few days. Always sad to see them go.

They left my neck of the woods last weekend. 😞

But a few of the house martins are still around!

Still hanging around in my area but definitely seeing them gather readying to set off. I had two broods reared this summer in my shed again.

Surprising number of swallows still around east Clare over the last few days. Quite a few seen this evening. Some that I’ve seen at closer quarters have quite immature plumages…

(Sorry, should be in the 2023 thread)
