Rolex Explorer to a Panerai Luminor

    Hi everyone,

Jagcon1 here, used to be Jagcon

I have had to re register on Boards as my old email is gone so I couldn't change my password. So it's Jagcon here I have been looking on boards for a long number of years.

I've got a Rolex Explorer 214270 complete with box and papers I bought it for my 40th, I'm looking for advice, I'm thinking of selling it as I'd like to get a Panerai Luminor PAM1085 and possibly a Tudor Black Bay GMT coke colours.

Am I mad? I love my Rolex and have had many watches over the years and always flipped them at some stage. I'd love a Sub but just can't justify the prices these days.

One way of doing this would be to trade it with a dealer that has a Tudor GMT plus cash, but I'm afraid that what they would offer cash wise would be low.

    Any advice would be great

I cannot offer any Panerai advice, I know tudor GMT well enough....bit thick and slab sided. But if you are going down that path a exchange deal with Watchfinder sounds like the way to go. They are usually fair enough to deal with.

Swapping Rolex for not rolex is never the best deal if you love your Rolex. There is not the same ownership experiance certainly in Tudor, Panerasti seem to love their watches all the same. I dont know, I know you cn get bored with a watch and want to experiance new ones. Whatever makes you happy.

I have the pam1084 which is the same as the 1085 but with black dial. Also have the Tudor pepsi.I previously had the OP39 and assume the explorer is similar on the wrist to that .With the size of the Panerai and the Tudor I find them to be much more noticeable on the wrist which may not be for everyone. The Rolex is more of a wear and forget watch as opposed to the other two which grab your eye all day.I would much rather the two over the Rolex but I enjoy variety in my watches. The explorer is a very boring watch if you only have one watch .

if you go for it (and if it was me I would),I would say sell the explorer for around €8& half / €9k ish. You’ll get a Pepsi Tudor for €3500 and a 1085 for €4500.

Disagree with you on the ownership experience.I have Panerai,Tudor and Rolex in my current collection and the Rolexes get worn least. It depends on where your watch interest is coming from.No one notices my watches so the brand recognition isn’t important to me which means I get as much enjoyment from my seikos as I do from my Rolexes. But if you want people to know you can afford expensive stuff then yeah Tudor doesn’t say money like Rolex does. Each to their own.

I do not get the same enjoyment from Seiko as I do Rolex But I dont get the same enjoyment out of a Rolex as I do a Patek either. Enjoyment maybe....but not the same. I dont really care if people think I can afford expensive stuff...but I do care to give the impression I am interested in and seek out quality, workmanship and good design. You can only wear one watch at a time, and each time you put one on that could be the last watch you ever wear, so make it one you really love , and one that says something about you, whatever that may be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭scwazrh

I don’t think anyone sees you wearing your patek and thinks now there’s a man who seeks out quality and workmanship, And I can assure you that on the day I wear my last watch ever I will not care in anyway which watch is on my wrist but I get your point of wearing what you love .

back to the op , it really depends do you want one good watch or two good watches .They are all better watches than we need .

Thanks for the comments everyone, yeah my thinking is to go for the Tudor as a every day option and the Panerai for the weekend. I have had my Explorer for 4 years now and am in the mood for a change.

Has anyone on here used Watchfiner.ie to sell/exchange with? is there an Irish office or do you send the watch to the UK?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,571 ✭✭✭Fitz II

Yeah, I get the itchy feet.

Watchfinder.ie are now running out of France and they have different stock to the UK site. Make sure you are on the .ie site as watches bought on the UK site are subject to duty etc.

Its an easy process find the watches you want. and there is an option to make a trade enquiry. Give them the details of the watch you want to sell and the ones you want to buy and they will email you back with an offer. Remember to negotiate a little bit. Once agreed they send you a DHL packet for the rolex and you package it and a currier picks it up. Good instructions are give. Once it gets to Paris its checked and then the new watches are shipped to you.

I find WF very easy to deal with and they run efficiently for the most part. And when you are doing a deal where you are selling and buying they are very competitive.

Has any Panerai owners on here gotten any discount from the Weir's the AD in Dublin? The model I'm looking at is in stock, so is there any movement on prices these days?

Mine was €3950 for the 1084 about 16months ago in weirs.1085 & 1084 are same list price

one thing i have found is that if you see something on the uk site they seem to be able to get it for you through ie, not quite sure how that works in the background.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 jagcon1

Yeah the 1085 are up for €5,400 on Weir's website. I'm wondering if there's any movement on the prices?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭scwazrh

They moved to €3950 from €5400 on mine but the market is very different now than it was a yr ago. They always seem to move on price it just depends how much.

I get these feelings. I can’t get excited about most steel Rolex, Tudor etc. Appreciate some can but if you took away the value retention I suspect a lot less would be!

Especially not excited about Rolex at grey pricing. At least Tudor are cheap (relatively speaking). I much prefer Omega but their size trends have alienated me.

I always say I if I have to pay 3x to get 5 percent more then I want the 5 percent. Sadly the higher end stuff is gone batshit also. Independents all mental with year long wait lists and price increases. The market is a parody of its self as everyone is a watch dealer and expects to sell for more than they paid. Everyone looking for the next one to the moon.

My DDS is going to be a month or 2 late……reason…..the watch maker was sick……ain’t no watch makers at Rolex looking after your watch only line operators. Now who makes my watch is not especially important to me. It’s all about the finishing for me, front and back. If I am spending 5k plus I expect a craft and brilliance on my wrist. The brand matters less and less.

Fucked up the quote there, boards is unusable on iPhone. Voting with my feet/fingers now for a while and quitting posting as it takes an age to type a message with it jumping around.

Hi scwazrh, by any chance do you remember what the list price back then, when you got the deal for 3950?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭scwazrh

List price on panerai site was €5400 , weirs discounted it to €4400 and then there was another 10%discount on purchase which was either a Xmas or Black Friday discount

On two different watches this year the most I could get was 10%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 jagcon1

Thanks scwazrh, appreciate that, I think I'd be happy with 10%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭scwazrh

I think 10% seems to be the discount there at. I’ve bought a few Tudor over the last couple of months and got no discount on them. Tried for a GS in weirs and 5% was the most they offered.I was expecting 20-30% off a GS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 jagcon1

Have to say I'm a happy man with this beauty.

Congrats very nice ! Well Wear! 1085 ? Hard to tell from pic

did you buy in weirs in the end ? If so how did you get on with a discount ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 jagcon1

Hi scwazrh, no it's actually a 1086 but with a black strap. I actually preferred it over the 1085, has cleaner lines on the dial. Yeah picked it up in Weirs. Didn't get 10% but got to about 8%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭scwazrh

Very good . I should of noticed that it was 1086 as no small seconds. That’s actually the one I wanted when I got mine as it’s the closest modern panerai to the pre v one made famous by Stallone .Perfect panerai

As these are the two brands that I get least, I really can't be of any help at all here. The Explorer is one of the least afflicted models, and by that I mean with the taint of being a Rolex. As for the Panerais - they are all equally afflicted.

    I'll get me coat.

Hi, I have an older, smaller, Explorer and a PAM048. Very different watches in terms of what they wear like. The Explorer is a "quiet" Rolex that generally goes un-noticed and is nice for a shirt and tie outing. The Panerai is a big unit and I caught it on a few doors. It does not wear too well with a shirt and rides the cuff, a lot more noticeable. The Panerai IMHO is more of relaxed wear watch than the Explorer.
