Looking at buying a weekend car - Recommendations & thoughts of a CLS 350 welcome

    Hi all,

I'd like to buy a 'fun' car for the weekends. No major criteria other than good bhp, reasonable spec. etc. Budget of about €5,000 (if that's even possible with the market!) and I do have a preference for a 4 door car.

I came across a CLS 350 for €4,000 and just wondering what are these cars like in terms of reliability etc.? I know a 16 year old Mer for €4,000 is unlikely to be the definition of reliable and that the NCT is fairly short.

I had an old V6 CLK a while back and it was a lovely summer car because you could open all 4 windows without the pillars in between. Might be worth a look at also but big engines are rare enough in them.

Always wanted an older model CLS myself but thought the insurance on that big an engine would crucify me

Supposedly with a new NCT, it's 5.5k with lower tax of 1250 per year, compared with the one quoted above

Horribly tinted front and rear tail lights - not to mention dangerous, aftermarket screen inside.

Also is a diesel, so not sure how ‘fun’ the OP would find it, would say the petrols would be better in that department.

Nice reg on it but would stay away from this one personally

I know someone who bought an old Jag v8 XK8 for fun at the weekends - he sold if fairly soon afterward as he just didn't fit the bill. A lump like the CLS while a lovely daily driver I don't think would cut the mustard as a 'fun weekend' car. I'd be looking at something smaller, quicker and focused ... the idea of a weekend car is that it wouldn't be practical as a daily driver as the compromise between practical and fun isn't worth it
