Sports jacket/blazer and chinos are hard to beat as a smart casual look

You're a mature man.. you don't need to wear a tie with a suit. That's just for work. Still, a shirt with a collar is pretty much a must if you're wearing a suit. Collarless articles tend to make guys look pretty bad combined with a suit unless you've got one of those toned bodies, most of us don't have. Being skinny doesn't count, unfortunately. 😂

As for the rest, I'd check with your missus, or whoever is organising the event, because you could likely get away without wearing a suit. Things have changed considerably over the last few years. Also, Perfectly acceptable to wear trousers with a shirt.

Can't really go wrong with slim leg trousers (Black/Charcoal), slim white shirt, and some nice shoes (I'm saying slim since you have it in your link).. Nothing flamboyant but it always looks great. Personally I hate wearing jackets/blazers rather than the tie.

Thanks i will ask a few of the other dads. I don't so much mind the suit jacket. I feel more comfortable in a jumper rather than a shirt.

No problem not to wear a suit. As in the pics at that link, a polo neck jumper can look very well with a formal jacket. I wouldn't go with a white polo with a navy jacket though - maybe deep red / wine or bottle green (or burnt orange if you can find one) - just make sure it's a light material with a close fit......which may not be the best option depending on your build! I wouldn't buy that jacket though unless you were pairing it with the matching trousers as it's a 'proper' suit jacket and they usually look bad if worn solo. Better off getting a blazer / 'sport jacket' with a more informal texture but not so informal as to have a check pattern. Looking at that Littlewoods site I think this would be a good option, and would go with the jumpers above. It's single vented at the back though which may be an issue if you have a fullsome posterior!

Don’t go for the Rab C. Nesbitt look anyway.
