Garden Fence Paint (durable!)

We've used Ronseal and more recently cuprinol on our pressure treated timber fences and both of them have worn off so badly. Garden is east facing so probably gets rougher weather than our previous house (exact same fences and no issues with staining). I'm fed up looking at the brown so will switch to a coloured paint now but can anyone recommend something durable that might last the 12 months until next Spring/Summer.

I used Cuprinol Garden Shades on a raw wood (not treated with preservative) garden bench last year. Willow colour (light green), looks a bit more like paint than usual fence stain. It stood out all winter and looks fine. The paint covered even the lower few inches of the legs that had been soaked in (the modern version of) creosote. I think I gave it two coats. Its very unlikely looking stuff, thin and doesn't look as though it will do anything at all, but I have been very impressed with the way it lasted. It may work out too expensive to use on a fence though.

Personally I'd recommend a coloured fence life (Ronseal) , primarily because it's more of a stain (wood absorbs) rather than a paint , which will essentially peel. I would definitely not recommend an oil based paint as it will peel and removing that would be a nightmare. All stains will fade in time but the beauty of using this type of product is, refreshing a doddle with no major preparation work required.

One paint option I would recommend is Ronseal garden paint , some great colors, lasts well but will fade , easy to apply also but a little more expensive than stains.

Finally , I know you are tired of Brown but a final recommendation would be Creto , it comes in light and dark brown , is petroleum based admittedly but not only does it preserve wood, it takes years to fade .(I live in the slieve bloom mountains, wild winter's) and can vouch for it. Very inexpensive also.

Apologies, I was thinking more a standard oil based paint. I'm not familiar with Bonex oil based paints but familiar with their stains and decking oils which are excellent.

A, I see 👍 I made a horrible mistake , many years ago , small picket fence, thought a bit of gloss paint would be nice 😳 disaster 😁

Nowadays something like Cuprinol Garden Shades or Ronseal Garden Paint which gives a good paint finish would do the job fine. Only problem is they take longer to apply than most fence "paints".

Yes, I agree, I use the Garden paint range, have it on a number of areas, I find it's better for smooth surfaced woods though rather than rough finished timber , some of the lighter colours also require two coats. I use the garden paint of decorative features rather than fencing.

Might be pricey though in comparison to stains.

I also am delighted with the Ronseal garden paint for bits of garden furniture, but when the fence finally gets a lick of colour, it'll be stain cause I want to ignore it for as long as possible between coats. The garden paint is bright blue, lime and hot pink, and it's dirty from splashes of mud rather than any degradation in the paint itself in the last two years.

Thanks everyone. We ended up trying the cuprinol garden shades and very happy with the coverage. Time will tell on durability.
