Family holiday abroad this summer?

I didn't get past checking out flight prices nevermind browsing hotels 😳

Is that it now? The regular joe soap cannot afford to bring his family abroad for a week or so on the Costas? Surely the market will have to react and come to a level that mere mortals can afford!

I get the whole supply and demand model but Ryanair/aerlingus couldn't be filling planes at those prices.

I'm going to have a cup of tea, gather my humble thoughts and approach my browser again later in the hope that with a steady hand a sharp eye and a bit of flexibility from her indoors I can secure some form of holiday for the clan.

Have you tried travel agents? They might have something more affordable.

We were shocked as well but we got a deal through a travel agent that would have cost hundreds extra if we booked it ourselves.

We are staying in ireland again. It just seems a lot of expensive hassle to go abroad for us.

I think that's a wise decision even though i am traveling... the hassle and queues at the Airports are crazy...

Whatever about flights, more accommodation will free up closer to the dates, both home and abroad.

People were booking up everything with Covid and free cancellation.

I booked our usual spot in Portugal (up about 30%) and our usual flights out of knock ( they were double the usual price) and are now over 4 times what they usually cost.

I'm expecting the locals bars and restaurants to be gone up aswell, this is the way everything seems to be going now.

I got good(ish) flights to Milan, €850 for 5 off us, late August. The Car Hire seems outrageous (€1,000) for ten days, more than twice the normal rate and the accommodation is all booked out. I'm trusting the accommodation will become available. In all I will be budgeting about €3,500 for five of us for ten days. Nearly double the normal rates.

Flights out of Shannon I would have in the past booked for around €900 for a family of 4 are closer to €1600. Hotels up about 30%/40%. I fear these prices are here to stay but hope that in some way tye market realizes that it won't get people through the door at those prices and a more sustainable level is found.

Back in the day it was only the local doctor and publican that could jet off to the sun. I pray we're not back to a similar situation. We've become accustomed to relatively inexpensive travel but that day looks to be long gone.

Do you stay in milan or travel elswhere?

Im not even trying to go in the summer due to a few reasons, but got a week in salou early may for 5 of us and cost a shade under €1650. Flights, accom and transfers all booked direct.

I booked 2 weeks in Majorca on 20/7/21 (the day we actually travelled last year - day after they reopened travel) for the last 2 weeks in June 22. Cost of beachside accommodation in palmanova was €1254 (sea view). Today, the same room would cost me €3500. Flights (booked as soon as the dates came available) have doubled.

The gouging was always on the cards once everything reopened (I did not think to this level) but somethings surely gotta give in 2023.

I guess prices were artificially low last year too.

im going to organise passports for my boys and see if we can get anywhere later in year but the summer is going to be about Airbnb and camping.

    This,

we managed to book our flights and accommodation to france for the same price (give or take) as 2019.

Car hire however has tripled in cost. Apparently hire companies reduced their fleets during pandemic and with computer chip shortages have not been able to restock to the same levels

Prices have gone up for sure. Have you looked at midweek departures or late evening flights? Check Dublin and Belfast for flights as well as Shannon.

Dublin is often best priced for flights and has more options, but time to get there and the hassle is often not worth it. For us, Shannow would be preferable for the minimum hassle, but flights have gone up quite a bit. Looked at similar flights from Cork and they are far cheaper. 'Google flights' is great to get an idea of what days are better to search.

In November last year I booked return Ryanair flights for 2 adults, 2 children and 1 infant to Barcelona Reus first 2 weeks in June. It was around €1900, just checked today and interestingly looks to still be the same price. Half board hotel with 2 bedroom apartment in Salou for €2500. At least another €100 on airport parking and transfers too. It's fairly steep for us but like a lot of others we have money saved from the last 2 years of no foreign holidays so that makes it manageable. Next summer probably back to staycations or try find something cheaper than 4.5k for 2 weeks

For us, if we didn't have Credit/Vouchers from 2020 and didn't have our holiday fund which we kept paying into throughout the Pandemic, we wouldn't be going abroad this Summer.

That's a good tip. We can't do it this year due to Exam year for one child but we have done this in the past. We left just ahead (a week or so) of break up of school.

we rebooked our holiday that we had to cancel in 2020 for this summer - pricing was the same. Booked through Trailfinders and is 3 weeks on the west coast of the US. Helped that we had about 50% of it paid off in 2020 .. so just kept a balance with them until we rebooked in October. I'd imagine if we went to rebook now it would be much more expensive

Friends went to Nerja the other day for a week. They are early retirees and paid top dollar for their break. It is lashing it down where they are, and no respite expected until the day they return.

Lovely here. Off to Galway for a three night break in Galmont next week. 73 pp b and b which is not bad IMV and the hotel was recommended. Will take a trip over to Inis Mor for the day by plane which I am looking forward to. That costs 55 return each.

Might not bother going abroad this year. It all sounds a bit of a hassle and instead might do a bit of the Wild A W once the sprogs have gone back to their desks in September. I prefer not to travel in July and August as that is family holiday time, and did it for long enough.

There is a campsite called Bella Italia camp site that is fabulous for kids and bang in the centre for adults too. We have grown up a bit to Agriturismo, a bit further out but more real.

Timing. We booked our Easter break to Portugal last November and got ridiculous flights out of Knock (600) and a 4 star 2 bed apartment costing 800 for two weeks on Airbnb. Incidentally, we actually stayed in this same apartment 5 years ago and it cost 2000 for 9 nights at the time.

The flights went up greatly about 6 weeks ago but are now cheaper again (same dates we booked). It really is unbelievable to have Knock on our doorstep.

Keep looking and check out what the Travel Agents may have to offer. Best of luck.
