Space Saver Wheels

I see many adverts looking for a space saver wheel for a particular car model.

However, it appears to me that there are only two criteria that one needs when choosing a space saver wheel ....

1️⃣ The wheel Diameter and 2️⃣ The number of nut holes.

So, for my Prius I reckon that all I need is a 15" wheel with 5 nut holes.

Am I correct? --- Would a 16" be better because the lower profile of space saver tyres?

There's a bit more to it than that.

The centre bore needs to be the right size, too small and the wheel wont fit your hub, too big and it wont channel the weight peoperly.

The offset needs to be right too, if it's too shallow the wheel will foul on the brake calliper and it wont fit.

The wheel should be close to the same radius as the existing wheels to prevent damage if the car has any fancy diffs or 4wd systems etc. Also needs to be sized properly to make sure it fits into the spare wheel well in radius and width.

Thanks toyotafan - That's really useful information!

Any suggestions on sourcing a reasonably Prius space saver wheel.

Needs to be the correct PCD aswell, I think prius are all 5x100. Your best bet is to get one from a prius of the same vintage as yours. Try adverts.ie or ring around to some scrapyards. Does your prius even have room to stow a spacesaver? Typically they have those inflation kits

Route66 are rather pricey - and I don't need a jack, wrench or bag! Scrapyards, DD & Adverts look my best option.

.... and you are correct aulddaysu ... the Prius 2018 PCD is 5x100

I will have plenty of room for the spare and will also have additional storage, when I remove the polystyrene and raise the floor of the boot up to the same level as that of the lowered rear seats. I'll post some before and after pictures in a few months when I get the carpentry job done.

    Thanks everyone!

try https://www.wheel-size.com/ or autoparts places that lookup your reg to find the model no

    Double check the model https://www.wheel-size.com/size/toyota/prius-phv/2018/ - 6Jx15 ET40 , PCD: 5x100 , Center Bore: 54.1 mm , Thread Size: M12 x 1.5

My car is PCD: 5x100 and 6J but the Bore , Thread and ET all different so couldn't use the same wheels even though the holes would line up.

Unless you absolutely need the space go for a full sized wheel and tyre. Otherwise you are restricted to 50Kph / 50km or whatever the space saver or manual says as they only exist to get you to the next garage.

I have a space saver spare from an Astra that didn't fit my later model.

You can have it for €20 if it's any good to you.

100's of Prius scrapped in the last few years from age and cat thefts so you should get one handily enough in a scrap yard.

The prius wheel PCD 5x100 and the centre bore is 54.1mm. Can you confirm that your wheel takes 5 nuts and the diameter on the centre hole 54 millimetres.

    Many thanks Hermy,

    Astra wheels won’t fit.

Your best bet is a 1997-2008 Avensis, another Prius newer than 2004, or a Lexus CT.
