BMW E90 318D not starting

My BMW E90/318D is not starting. The battery was replaced a few months ago, so I know it not that. I have also tried jump starting it to be sure.

There is some kind of howling sound, which I presume is the starting trying to kick in but failing to start the engine. I am assuming it is a failed starter but could it be anything else before I start replacing that?

This is a recording of the sound when I try to start the car: http://sndup.net/mpkn

How you are so sure, there is no battery fault? Did you measure the battery voltages? When you used the car last time?

Battery could be near completely flat from lack of use or from something left on like an internal light, when did you last drive the car? Are you sure nothing was left on? Jump starting can be hit and miss if you are using budget leads that can't carry the load from donor car.

Do the headlights look ok when you put the full beams on?

Thank you both for the replies.

I just checked the car battery voltage (though the car service menu) and it shows 11.1v, which I don't think is enough to start the car. I'll charge the battery up through an external charger tomorrow and see what happens.

The car had been driven a few times a week and nothing I can see that would drain the battery. I had been trying to jump start with one of those jump starter packs. It worked fine a few times when the car‘s old battery started failing early last year (original battery seemingly, which managed almost 280,000km), but maybe there is something wrong with it too.

11.1V is basically 100% empty battery and very dangerous to attempt to crank. One that kind cranking can corrupt the memory and repair cost many hundreds of euros. The best what you can to do now is disconnect that battery immediately and charge it full. Also you need figure out is it charging system problem or you have a massive parasitic draw
