Hi All. Have to get rid of my thirsty 2015 modeo as the current 3K annual fuel costs are only going up. Have had a fleeting look at electrics but my budget get's me a 2018\2019 ioniq or leaf and the range is just not enough for me. Between school runs, taking kids to training, drops offs etc and little access to a charge point at work i just cant make it work. What i need is the the best MPG car available that i can get for max 22k. Nothing smaller than a yaris, but dont need a big tank like my mondeo either. need to purchase sooner rather than later so recommendation or links greatly appreciated.

If you click on cars on usedcarsni.com it will show the urban, extra urban and combined mpg which might help your search.

Eg Jaguar Xe is 75mpg combined and an Auris is 80mpg

75mpg from a Jaguar XE, lol. What planet did they get those figures from?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 254 ✭✭micah537

    Apparently jag claimed it.

Also on some forums they say you can achieve it on long journeys at 50mph. Anyway I'm sure you'd get close to 45-50mpg driving normally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,372 ✭✭✭ongarite

What the economy l/100km on your Mondeo. At 3K fuel bill you must be doing 25-30k a year?

Sounds like you are doing lots of stop start short journeys bringing family around the locality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 TheRebelBull

I am getting 560 miles on a full tank which is now costing me 100 per fill and only going up. Doing 20000 miles per annum so currently looking at 3.5k fuel costs per annum. Its the usual combination of stop start and long motorway drives. Thinking of a Renault Megane 2017 1.6 Diesel. Impressive MPG and still plenty big enough. Thoughts? Thank you :)

looking at a low mileage 2018 Megane Grand Coupe. With a private sale of my 2015 mondeo will need to add about 9K to get the megane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,362 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It might have been cheaper to have just kept the Mondeo going. Even at today's prices 22k would buy you alot of fuel and finding something more economical for your usage might a tough find especially when you have to spend 22k to do it. 22k might get you a 2021 Yaris hybrid now which will probably be better on fuel as it's a much smaller car but your still spending a fair amount of money to buy it.

Honest John would be a better site as it gives real mpg, usually 70-80% of official figures.

Around 57 mpg average for Yaris hybrid, not great. I’ve a 2008 quashqai that I bought in 2020 for 2k 1.5d and doing close to that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,655 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

One of the best be an auris or Corolla diesel.

I've a Leon 2.0 diesel. Almost always over 50mpg. The 1.6 golf, Octavia, Leon, A3 probably better again.

Civic diesel very economical. As is the 1 series BMW

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,900 ✭✭✭djan

Does the current car meet your needs? The MPG you're getting seems pretty fine. Spending 22k (or 9k to change to the Renault) to save some 30% in fuel costs makes zero financial sense given the mileage you do.

So then it's time to reconsider an electric. There are public charge points, and on my mileage I suspect saving could be up to 3k per annum. It's substantial. My trading in and adding g 9k I could get a 18 Nissan leaf. Seems to make financial sense to consider?

What's the round trip for your work commute?

Is it a a Leaf 40 you are looking at?

Can you install EV charger at home?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,362 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Buying an EV or PHEV without having a charger installed at home is crazy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,655 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 TheRebelBull

Sorry did not make myself clear, yes I would be installing a home charger without question and 6 out of 7 days my daily commute is under 100mikes, but its that 7th day when I have numerous multiple trips in a day that takes me nearer the 200 mile trip, that makes me nervous. Djan, great advice, my mondeo is going great so for marginal savings on a car thar does say 60mpg, is just not worth the initial outlay. The 40kw leaf range is just not sufficient, and the 62kw is over the budget, so feeling like I might have to suck it up and hope the fuel costs cone down. Jaysus even though of an electric bike :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,362 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I think your mileage is still in diesel territory given the money you have to spend. The problem is that how long will it take you to break even on cost of upgrading your existing car versus the savings made from any improved mpg?

If diesel stays about €2 a litre and you go from 40mpg to 60mpg you'll save €1500 a year. That'll take a long time to buy a €21k car.

    Hopefully the €2 litre won't stay a fact a life. Then you'd be saving €1000 a year.

But if you were thinking of changing regardless??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 TheRebelBull

Am getting 50mpg from the mondeo so 60mpg saving won't be massive so it's electric or nothing, and I'm coming to decide it's gonna be my trusty mondeo for another year at least, thx all for replies it's good to talk:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,362 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

If your getting 50mpg from your Mondeo then it's not thirsty. I think your expectation of fuel economy has dropped because of current fuel prices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 TheRebelBull

It's the overall fuel costs per annum that annoys me. What about car financing? For the akmost 300 monthly in diesel I am putting onto my mondeo I could use it the pay the monthly finance on a new\nearly new car? With a 10k deposit from my sale of mondeo. For this I am driving a new car and same monthly costs. Seems logical???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,362 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

What benefit do you see between spending 300 a month on diesel and 10k + 300 a month on a loan? You still have to put fuel into the new car too.

It sounds like you just want a newer car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 TheRebelBull

My new or nearly new will be electric with minimal running costs. So instead of pumping 300 into fuel its just going into directly into my monthly repayments. My current car has 200000km on the click and I will be driving a nearly new car with warranty for literally the same monthly cost. My old car becomes the initial deposit for my electric.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,362 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Out of curiosity what new EV are you going to get with the required range you need for it to work for 300 a month?

And remember electricity isn't free either, granted it's cheaper than diesel but electricity prices have increased 50% in the last 12 months so your not insulated from further increases there either.

The Kia e-niro, soul,Hyundai Kona, MG5 ID.3 should all do over 200 miles easily. Cupra born too. You are right the fuel savings will mostly cover the payments. And depreciation very low at present too although unpredictable. Just enquire around and see what the dealers come back with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,655 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

Are any of them under €40k?

Unless the VW configurator changed in 3 weeks the iD3 is low 40s.

The Cupra doesn't exist here yet, is impossible to buy and will cost mid 40s.

    There's a 2019 e Niro on dd for 30k. That'll cost the OP about €600 a month for the 20k loan over 3 years.

    Can't see where OP buys at 10k trade-in plus 300 a month.

Edit apologies. Not meaning to shift goalposts, maybe some of those are under 40k new, I just can't see any of them fitting the OPs criteria and see this a lot with EVs now. I'd buy a decent EV if 10k deposit and 300 a month buys one.....

That ID.3 price is before seai grant

the Korean cars were all 35-38 after grant when I priced them last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,655 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

That's the iD after grant. They got rid of the lower prices ones.

Think the Koreans have all snuck up too.

E Niro now 39 plus delivery, so 40.

    Chip shortages.....

So if I am correct 6 out of 7 days you do 100km a day? or 100miles day?

Then one of those days you have lots of trips and could co 200miles in that day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 TheRebelBull

Thanks folks these comments very informative. 6 out of 7 days am less than 100miles a day. I can get 10k for my mondeo and if pushed can add another 5k on top. This corsa looks like it fits my needs at 27k. Thoughts? I just found a great car on Carzone.

That MG is One of the best value cars out there right now I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,655 ✭✭✭Wildly Boaring

That's changed from when I looked lately.

    But be 40k with delivery.

And I'm not doubting their maths but is 47-5 not 42?

The vrt rebate would be in there too. The configuration doesn’t really give accurate prices anyway. It gave very different figures to what we were quoted last April.

Mg electric have not been out long enough me determine if poor quality or not. New MG looks fab... and approx 30k. My budget initially was 22k, but here i am talking 30k cars. Time to take a deep breath and relax, i have less idea now what to do than when I posted my original post 😀

Jesus christ some dopes on here don't change your Mondeo for a **** corsa or Auris. 50MPG is really good going economy wise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 TheRebelBull

Easy there tiger put the can of tuberg down and read the posts, And the Corsa E with its range is right up street.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,772 ✭✭✭✭fits

Look at totaL cost of ownership and whether you can afford monthly payments and potentially high depreciation. Run the scenarios and see what comes up. It’s hard for anyone here to advise.

in my case we had an 06 C200. It was costing me 27 euro each day I commuted , was uncomfortable for me and was getting worried about reliability although it was running well. Tax was 950 a year.

I initially looked at diesel estates for under 20k. However it became obvious there were EVs that could do my 250 km commute easily. So test drive a few all in 35-38 bracket. I loved the Kia Soul, oH preferred the niro. Then we decided to test drive Id.3. It’s far superior to drive than the others. Dealer announced there was a 0% finance offer and boom sold. Delighted we didn’t go for the diesel estate now. Fuel savings are largely paying for the car. No darned NCT on horizon. and it’s a very safe car too with excellent ncap rating.

At OP. The Corsa is not the most spacious car and its very dull. Much better to get the Puegeot 208-e if you were going that route at least its not boring.

Citroen e-C4 is another to consider.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,027 ✭✭✭Lantus

The much better cars will give at best a 10 to 15% improvement. That means your 3500 fuel bill will drop to 3000 to 3200 depending on your driving style and how well the car is serviced.

Even saving 500 a year will be 18 years pay back before you save money after spending 9k to achieve these savings. There is no magic fuel car that can save that much money. Best bet is to save towards an ev in 3 years time. Or try to source a cheaper car to realize better overall economy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 TheRebelBull

Had a look at a corsa E during my break, yes it's pretty boring looking for sure. Made up my mind it's electric or nothing, so on the donedeal and looking hard :)
