Plumbing/Heating Quote

    Hi folks,

Just looking for opinions on a quote received for some work that is needed.

Issue: Hot water in the tank is running out after approx 30 mins. Attic tank is constantly filling.

Day 1 - Apprentice plumber replaces ballcock (i thought that was the issue). Next morning I contact the boss and advised that nothing has changed and the water in the attic isn't reaching the overflow. He then says that he didn't realise that it was reaching the overflow and that there is a leak somewhere on the hot feed from the tank.

Day 2 - Come back to the house and inspect all locations and can not find the leak. Advises of two options 1) get a crowd out to try locate the leak with a gas through the system or 2) bypass the current feeds and run new to each output. Went with option two to avoid breaking up tiles etc.

Day 3 - Ran new feeds and replaced a valve in the pump to stop the heating make a loud bang when being shut off.

All working fine after this. The quote was €700 ex VAT. Obviously should always ask the price beforehand, but just wondering if that seems about right?

    Cheers

New ball cock would have been €100 supplied & fitted alone.

Three visits over three days. He's charging the vat so it's through the books and he's paying tax on it. €700 becomes €350 after tax. That's not including the cost of the materials. They could be €100 to €150.

Assuming he supplied the materials then price seems reasonable enough in today's climate. Where I think he's worth the money is he kept going till the job was done & done right.

Not a word of a lie, I know a plumber who would do it cheaper but you have to pick him up at his house. He'll leave you waiting outside for 20 or 30 minutes while he has breakfast. You then bring him to the supplier for materials. Then on to the job. He'll take an hour for lunch and you'll have to bring him to the shop to buy his lunch. He finishes work at 4pm. While he is in your home he will make & receive calls. You'll hear f this & f that. "ah he's only a cu*t" at the top of his voice. You will drop him home. You don't give him a sub because he will end up in the pub & won't go to work the next day. He will charge you €200 per day cash in hand.
