advice needed

hi folks maybe not the right forum for this,but here it is...left my 161 rav4 in under warranty for a pulley to be replaced 2 weeks ago,had to cancel an nct appointment on the advice of the garage,nct was due on 28/02/22,the day the old one expires,i was given a car for a loan until the rav was done,fair enough,today i was told the rav may not be ready for another 2 weeks,as a part is on order,my next available date for an nct is 04/05/22.so if the rav was fixed lets say next week,i by law cannot drive/collect it because id have no currant nct,an offence to drive without one,i could maybe tell the garage to bring it back on a tow truck,but i could not ues it until i got it tested,i need a car for work etc,so am going to be allowad to keep out this loan car until mine gets an nct? what if the garage says,once its fixed thats it, its nothing to do with them about the nct,bring back the loan car,or what if they say we will deliver back your car and collect the loan car,that would leave me stuck without transport until may,so i hope i have not confused you,any advice? thanks

You will make all the Gardai unemployed... just ask the garage to confirm date when ready and book a test the fallowing week... Well that's what i would do... i be surprised if any Gardai issue a summons it you have garage receipt and booked test...

I am not sure if we can be prosecuted for not having a current after a road accident but someone here will know...

There is, iirc, an "exemption" which allows for driving a car without a currnet NCT if the purpose is to bring the car to/from the NCT or to bring the car to/from a place for it to be repaired/prepared for the NCT.

Obviously as you know you cannot drive it for daily use without an NCT and as for the loan car until the NCT, no idea, that would be between your garage and you.

Just curious what part it is that they don't have and cannot get for two weeks. Other garages, main dealers at that, should have the part or be able to get it much faster than that.

I would stress the urgency to have the car back before the NCT date given the predicament it puts you in not getting it done on the 28th.

hi cass,the part that is on order is a crankshaft pulley wheel,the rav4 has a bmw engine,and the part has been ordered from bmw,so im told,its on order for 2 weeks,no sign of it yet

Madness it takes two weeks, and counting, for a part. We [Irish] accept far too much in terms of allowing lax/slow service and quietly getting annoyed instead of throwing a feck at people at times and pushing for better service. You could, or the garage could, have ordered it from an online motor factors quicker. I know they either won't do it or would never admit to doing it and claim such nonsense as "genuine parts only".

I recently went to a main dealer about a part. They quoted me €44 for a pair of the part(s) but would have to order it, taking 4 days (not counting the weekend and I was ordering on a thursday. So it would be Wednesday at the earliest. I thought it was odd a main dealer wouldn't carry such a commonly replaced part. Went to the local motor factor who order the part at 16:15, then rang me the follwoing morning at 9:25 saying it was in. Same part and I mean identical markings from the same manufacturer. Also worked out at €28 not that price was that big an issue.

You will be fine... i drove a car around for a few months when they were only doing a half a test... i was actually stopped at Covid checkpoints and was not asked about NCT out...

up date,still waiting for my rav,had a phone call 4 days ago to say the part has not come yet.it will be a month this friday since they took it in,a bit ridiculous now at this stage,had to cancel 2 ncts,suppose nothing can be done,just have to wait till its done

Ask them if they would drop it to the nct for you and get it done .
