Is there any value to be got in the car market atm

I sold my car this week without having another car bought. Browsing donedeal and the likes and there seems to be no value. I don't think these prices will really drop either, with wages increasing along with all other costs.

I drive an average of 500km a week with work so not sure how practical a hybrid or electric car might be.

Can anyone in the know share their knowledge with me?

I can't find any gaps in the market, even the max tax €1809 stuff is going crazy money.

With that mileage you will probably be best with a diesel.

Maybe try to get a car about five years old with low mileage and hope things improve over the next five years.

Problem is you won't be the only one doing the same so if you see one move fast.

What is your budget, preferred type of car etc.?

I agreed over the phone to sell my car to a guy and stuck to my word but was surprised with amount of people willing to give me more. Probably should have held on a bit longer.

Thanks for your reply. I was thinking diesel alright. The car I had was petrol and costing me approx €25 as of last week to get too and from work which when you add the tolls as well means I'm working 1 day a week just to get too and from work. Typing that has just put everything in to perspective 😮

I don't mind spending 20k on a car once it brings my costs down. Was thinking a mazda 6 but a 2.2 engine might be a bit heavy. Any suggestions welcomed

The Mazda 2.2 diesel has a bad rep so I wouldn't recommend it.

An Avensis might suit you, it won't set the world on fire though.

For your budget you will get a 2018.

Other likely contenders are the Passat, Mondeo or Superb.

Get a 2 litre if you can.

It's probably a bit more then 500km, work at the moment is a 65km drive so 130km. Don't do much driving outside of this from Monday to Friday. Have not seen any car charges but does not mean I don't have access to one

Unreal how things have gone. I paid €5,800 for a 2012 Avensis back in August 2019. High spec but relatively high mileage too at 260,000kms. It has 300,000 on it now and looking at DoneDeal I would nearly get the same money back for it today. Hard to see where the value is at the minute.

This cars range is beyond your work commute and you would need to charge in work, depending on how you drive you might only use 1 litre or several, it would have reduced tolls,

For your budget you can get a self charging hybrid version, close to the same economy as a diesel, or you can get the EV version but it would require a little bit of a charge in winter time to get home with a buffer, better reduction in tolls with an EV.

A out door 3 pin would suffice.

You said 25 euro in petrol and tolls, was that per day?

It's definitely a sellers market at the moment and I think things will get a little worse as the year goes on. I couldn't get rid of my car for 5000 last year and sold it for 6000 with ease this year

A self charging hybrid does sound good. I'd have to notice a significant difference in fuel costs if I were to break the 20k mark on my purchase. There are alot of hybrids for sale of late but do these come with hidden costs? Servicing or batteries etc?

My work commute would be a minimum of €25 a day tolls included

That link is for a plug in hybrid very different to self chargers which need petrol and do better in city driving than on motor way compared to a diesel.

If you make full use of the battery, you could get 60 km from a plug in, but its unlikely. You might mange 50 km and use 1 litre to do the other 15 km which is not impossible.

No reduced toll for self charging hybrids.

Ideally you would need to test one for 65 km. then you can compare. 25 euro a day is 500 a month, you could finance new with that much.
