LED Headlights and Washers

    Hi all,

I had a 2016 C Class which had LED headlights, not the fancier high spec ones but I think they were the next step up from halogens. I've only just realised that that car didn't have headlight washers.

    Here they are

I'm getting a B8 Passat with their basic LED package, and none of the cars on donedeal etc with those lights have headlight washer. Although the image I found shows a model with washers.

Some of B8 Passats with the high spec LEDs have headlight washers, and some don't according to Donedeal.

The NCT docs show that 2000 lumens is the threshold for needing the washers, but I'm wondering why there is the discrepancy and variation.

Is the headlight washer more of a xenon thing?

    Thanks all

It is down to the lumens output afaik. The output from most LED headlights doesn't pass the lumens threshold for a mandatory headlight washer system. There are different variations of LED headlights though, from the basic system to the more advanced Matrix LED or Laser LED systems. Some of the more advanced LED headlight systems come with headlight washers initially but as LED technology progressed the output of the lights improved without actually increasing or breaking the lumens threshold that required a washer system. Some manufacturers offered the washer system as an optional extra too usually as part of a winter or lighting pack but this option is becoming less common now with advancements in LED tech.

Thanks for the info, that's quite interesting.

Are there NCT implications to me upgrading the basic Passat LEDs (reflector units that I know doesn't have washers) to the high performance ones (dual projector) ?

I've been trying to track down the lumens which is a real pain.

I only copped that the c class (projector and reflector combo) didn't have washers. I'm out of the loop with car tech compared to years ago.

Your post is interesting in that I did notice the c class LEDs to be dimmer than my a4 xenons.

If there are no NCT implications, I think a more money than sense headlight upgrade may happen next summer.

    Thanks
