No Vat no

I recently paid a tradesman for work completed in my business. I paid him by cheque and he gave me an invoice showing vat. I noticed later that the invoice does not show a vat number on it. I have tried to contact him to get vat number but he won't answer phone texts or voicemails. I suspect that he is trying to cover up something. Is he legally obliged to give me his vat number in this case?

So it shows a VAT amounts but doesn't show a VAT number, right? Now a question is that it doesn't show your VAT or his own VAT? Maybe he's not VAT registered? In that case he doesn't have his VAT number to show. Which is fine and shouldn't bother you.

It doesn't show his vat no. He told me he was registered

Excuse my ignorance, I don't really know but why do you need his VAT number? Again, there may be the reason for that, so just asking.

If Fiat wants to reclaim the VAT s/he needs to know that it is a legitimate VAT recovery claim. Its possible the tradesperson isn't VAT registered but is pretending to be to charge a higher fee.

Fiat if you get no response from the tradesperson just contact Revenue, they'll be interested.

But if his invoice shows a vat amount and op goes to claim vat back wouldn't it show to revenue that the tradesperson isn't vat registered

OP - if you have paid him you are entitled to a VAT invoice - if he is registered and the invoice doesn't show his VAT number then it isn't a proper VAT invoice.

Aside to those wondering: If it was just a small vat claim amongst many one could include in VAT3 totals and Revenue would be none the wiser 99%+ of the time. But if the cost and related VAT is beyond the normal claims the OP makes, then Revenue will want the details of the transaction included in a box on the VAT3, including suppliers VAT number. Also if the amount paid >6k the OP may need the VAT number to complete a 46G return.

A tradesperson must show the vat number on a vat invoice if they have detailed the vat amount.

I'd simply call the vat dept of revenue and ask if they can supply the number so that your records are correct.

Can the revenue give out that information

I think you have this wrong - if the tradesman is not VAT registered, then s/he can't charge VAT. They have no means to send the VAT onto Revenue.

If they are VAT registered, they must charge VAT and quote their VAT number.

I had a similar run in with a tool hire place a while back - VAT charged, payment by cash, no VAT receipt. Got nowhere with them, just never did business with them again and casually mentioned to others in the area who might be looking to hire.

He is either vat registered and gave you a dud receipt to attempt to steal the vat or he is not vat registered and is falsely charging vat.

Either way it's a very serious offence and revenue come down on vat fraud above all else as basically this is their money he is just collecting.

Chase him up and make it clear that the vat transaction is going through your books one way or another. The hard way involves shopping him to revenue so it's his choice.
