Clueless about 2000+ cars -advice to buy?

Hi folks,

My 1995 Honda is dying- sounds like the gearbox has covid. Just shy of 250000 on it so I reckon it doesn't own me much.

I'll miss it - great sound system.

I know zero about "modern" cars.

I saw some posters say you'd be mad to go near a diesel- why is that?

Mrs E wants a 7 seater - budget is under 20k for a 2nd hand.

I saw a 2015 touran with milage of 60k - do they still clock cars? I can't believe that milage.

Or i could push the boat out and hp an electric car, but are there any that would do Cork to Dublin without a stop?

Modern diesel cars are good or designed for constant short journeys or city driving. They have a filter called a DPF that catches harmful particles and burns then off at a high temperature. The car needs to be running for a certain length of time to build up to the temperature for the filter to do it's job. This isn't achieved by doing constant short journeys so the filter doesn't complete it's cycle and eventually gets blocked. If you have managed this long without a diesel and your driving hasn't changed then best stay away from them.

And yes cars can still be clocked, in fact it's much easier these days as the odometer in modern cars is digital so no fiddling with the dashboard, it can be done via the right software. However there is alot more information about cars and their histories available these days so doing background checks on a car's history is paramount. I'd walk away from anything suspiciously low for the year that doesn't have proven history to back it up. Buying from a reputable source is also important.

That's a top of the range one.

I know that's a private seller but just an example. Best to buy from a garage unless you know your way around cars.

I wouldn’t be buying anything at the moment …prices for cars off the wall at the moment … try wait a year or so… surely things might straighten out somewhat … ?

THere is other S-Maxs on there too. I just picked that one because it looked nice. I only noticed afterwords that it was a private sale car.

If you're considering Electric you can get a MGZS which would get you to dublin from Cork with a fair bit to spare. You'd need to charge in Dublin to get you back though

used Car markets ruined between brexit and the constant vrt rises throughout the years …as we are only a small island we don’t have enough new cars being bought to sustain the many people like myself looking for second hand cars …those who can’t afford a new car…. Well not the ones I like anyways …

new car purchases were probably down on what it would’ve sold naturally over the last 2 years as result of Covid too..

and the newer cars here are far more expensive as result of taxation and greed

I’d say you will be seeing a flood of jap cars coming into the market in the coming years to help with supply which might lower second hand car costs

Dealers are still bringing in used cars from the UK to sell on here if they are VAT qualifying, however used car prices in the UK have risen too. Dealer still has to pass on the import duty to the Irish buyer. For the private buyer though there is little or no savings importing from the UK now.

Lexus do hold there value really well do. Maybe for a 2012 it's a bit much but I doubt its too far off for a Lexus.

Can’t get over the ‘luxury’ cars above with a manual gearbox. For the love of god get an automatic at least.

no 7 seater EVs available at reasonable price yet but plenty of them will get you Dublin to cork.

It's 2 k more than anything else we saw. Not a hybrid but all the others were either UK or Japan imports, and didnt want to buy a lucky bag.

Stand in a room with a modern diesel and a room with a modern petrol both running, you'll change your mind about which is running cleaner very quickly.

What companies claim and what is produced in reality are often very different as all of these statistics are produced in a lab on order to meet a certain standard.

Billions has been invested in diesel technology and certainly parts manufacturers are not ready for it to die out quite yet.

All of the petrol cars listed in that test do not conform to current EU standards, if you're going to call me out you could at least scan the article.

Modern GDI vehicles come fitted with a GPF, similar to a DPF to combat the same particles. Like for like, the diesel is still worse and under more stress, leading to more issues.
