A year ago I read that close to 2 BILLION masks have been dumped into the se.

That was a year ago. I have just seen a report on RTE/EuroNews that there are now needles, gloves, and all manner of sh1t in landfills and rivers and of course THE SEA. Covid masks are showing up in the bellies of dolphins and birdwatchers have seen nests with masks being used as material.
